A solid third-person shooter with sharp gunplay, a full slate of modes, and dependable pacing for fans of cover-based combat and squad play.

Nasz werdykt

If you are willing to sink dozens of hours into it, Gears 5 pays you back steadily, and most of the time the return is far from low. Its smartest move is refusing to treat "a sequel must completely upend everything" as an obsession. Instead it secures the series' most valuable assets first, the heavy feel of cover-based gunplay, the strong forward momentum of its level pacing, the parallel structure of its many modes, and only then reaches for a few careful expansions.

Strengths that hold the line

The result is a game that may not make everyone gasp about a sea change, but very easily carries fans of the genre through a smooth, satisfying run. The three pillars do the heavy lifting. The combat loop is dependable across the whole campaign, the level design keeps pushing you forward with real purpose, and the spread of modes means the experience does not end when the story does. Each pillar reinforces the others, so a weak afternoon in one mode is easily redeemed by jumping into another.

That stability is the throughline. Where other sequels gamble on reinvention and sometimes lose, Gears 5 bets on craft and consistently collects. It is the work of a studio that knows precisely what its audience values and protects it, rather than risking that goodwill on a swing that might miss. The additions it does make, the drone helper and the open zones, are calibrated to enhance the existing loop rather than to distract from it, which is exactly the kind of disciplined ambition that keeps a long-running series healthy without alienating the people who already love it.

Ceilings worth naming

It does have a ceiling, and an honest account names it. The story improves but is not yet strong enough to outshine the gameplay. The visuals are stable and excellent, yet they lack that generational tremor. The audio leans functional, short on a distinctive presence of its own. None of these are failures, but together they keep the game from reaching a higher tier.

There is also the matter of time. This title has been out for more than five years, and seen from today, the designs that felt fresh at launch now read more like a high-quality delivery off a mature industrial line. The bar rises as the years pass. That effect is objective, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest, especially when so many newer titles have iterated on the same ideas. What once looked like the leading edge of cover-based design now looks like a polished example of an established template, and the open zones that felt like a bold step now feel like a modest one in a market that has since gone much further in that direction.

Why the foundation still holds

But flip the perspective and that very observation proves how sturdy the foundation is. Played now, it still catches you and holds you on the strength of its combat and its content. A game has to be built well to survive that kind of aging without feeling hollow, and this one does. Plenty of titles from the same era have not weathered the years nearly as gracefully, their once-novel ideas curdling into dated chores. Gears 5 avoids that fate because its core was never about novelty in the first place; it was about a loop that simply feels good to play, and that quality does not expire.

It is not a legendary masterpiece. It is also absolutely not a routine update wheeled out to milk an old name. If what you are after is a third-person shooter with sharp gunplay, a complete set of modes, and dependable pacing, it remains genuinely worth your time. The honest bottom line is that Gears 5 knows what it is, executes that vision with confidence, and asks only that you meet it on its own terms. Do that, and it rewards the investment more reliably than most of its peers.
