Turns the patient pre-shot routine — reading tracks, judging the wind, masking your scent — into the actual game; a rare benchmark for realistic hunting

Nasz werdykt

Pull the six dimensions together and Call of the Wild is that rare thing: a game where the scores do not lie and the word-of-mouth does not lie, and the two are plainly not talking about the same thing. Read the logic behind that gap and you already know whether it belongs in your library.

Its place in history: a ceiling on a narrow lane nobody has shifted in years

It launched in 2017 and, to this day, no one has truly pushed it off the top of the realistic-hunting lane it built for itself. The hardest thing to copy was never the visuals or the species count; it was the decision to make everything before the shot — reading prints, reckoning wind, masking scent, choosing range — the core game itself, the part you actually came to play. That philosophy needs long years to polish, an ecology deep enough to hold it up, and a studio willing to feed it for well over a decade rather than ship it and move on. Its direct rival, the later Way of the Hunter, arrives newer-looking and smoother to pick up, and yet loses on exactly the things you cannot rush: the ecological depth laid down season by season, the sheer heft of long-term support, the 200,000-strong core community still turning up to hunt. The shape of the loop is easy enough to trace and clone; the trust and the crowd that only time bakes in are not, and that is the moat no fresh competitor can dig overnight.

A signature wilderness vista

Who should take it home, and who should walk on by

Who should buy it first. If what you want is a nature-watcher's unwind, the slow of a cup of tea and one print followed for a whole day, the player who believes in his bones that the process is the reward — it hands you an experience you will not find a second copy of in the category. The roughly 89 percent positive across more than 165,000 Steam reviews is that right crowd voting with its feet, a popular verdict no press average can paper over.

A quiet hunting dusk

Now who should walk on. Treat it as a fast shooter, come for dense firefight feedback and a steady drip of instant payoff, and its uncompromising realism will almost certainly drive you up the wall: no difficulty cushion at all, half an hour a head for a decent trophy, slow movement, an interface and a screen of jargon that offer no warmth, no gentle onboarding, a curve steep enough to wash you out in the first few hours.

That is exactly why the PC press average is only 64 and OpenCritic stalls at 68 — the press is vetting on behalf of the mainstream player, while that 89 percent on Steam is speaking up for the right one. Neither number lies; they are simply speaking for two crowds that want completely different things. See through to that and the buy-or-skip question has, in truth, already answered itself before you reach the till.

One line to close on: not built for everyone, but a ceiling built for the right one

It is not a game for everyone, and it never once set out to charm everyone who walked past. It rendered the act of hunting to a degree no peer has dared since, and in doing so nailed itself to a lane that is both narrow and cold and proud of it. But for the crowd willing to slow all the way down, to spend their patience and their feeling on a wilderness that never speaks a single line back, what it built is a ceiling nobody has managed to shift in eight long years. The price of that near-stubborn focus is a lukewarm middling press score it has carried from day one; the reward is a rare evergreen reputation, a near-90 verdict pressed out of more than 165,000 reviews by people who keep coming back. In an industry where new releases pile up by the week and the heat drains off in three months flat, evergreen is far scarcer, and worth far more, than any one-off high mark a launch-week review can hand out. If you happen to be the right one, it is worth walking slowly into, and worth staying inside for years.
