“PlatinumGames pushes free-form cutting and parry-Zandatsu to the limit; a short but legendary slasher whose bosses and music made it a cult classic”
Nasz werdykt
Stack every dimension together and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a game with hard edges that never once tries to please everyone. It carries real weaknesses, and it carries one strength sturdy enough to outlast the years. A decade on, a respectable spin-off has been slowly reclassified by players as one of the defining works of PlatinumGames' action design, sitting in the same breath as the studio's most beloved games, and that upward drift alone says plenty about what it got right.
Time took its side
The launch reception was already strong — 83 on Metacritic, 84 on OpenCritic, near-perfect marks in Japan. The startling part is the tail. Today the game holds more than 68,000 Steam reviews at a 96 percent rating, and that number has risen, not slipped, across ten years. Most games fade from conversation within months of release; this one did the opposite, accruing affection the longer it sat on people's shelves. Add the universally quoted "Nanomachines" line and a soundtrack that kept fermenting into memes, and it long ago graduated from "an action game" into a cult artifact the community keeps elevating, passing it down to newcomers like a rite. A title still pulling in fresh players and fresh discussion a decade after release runs on something no marketing budget can buy: a core experience nobody can take away, and a personality too specific to imitate. The memes were a side effect, not the cause; what kept the memes alive was that the game underneath them genuinely holds up. Plenty of titles trend for a week and vanish — this one trended, then earned the affection that the trend pointed at.
Who should buy it, and who should walk
So should you, today, pick it up? It depends entirely on which player you are. If you crave a hard-edged parry duel, if you'll happily grind a stage for a clean S, if you have an appetite for earnest, over-the-top story and music — this was practically built to your measurements, and you can buy in with your eyes shut. If the near-zero parry tutorial and steep opening curve sound exhausting, or six hours reads as too thin and you'd rather have a slow stealth sandbox, it will likely let you down — and there, Metal Gear Solid V is the better fit. Saying that plainly is more honest than blanket praise. This is not a game that meets you halfway; it asks you to come to it, to absorb a couple of hours of getting wrecked before the whole design clicks into focus. Players who make that deal tend to fall hard, the kind of hard that turns into a permanent slot on the favorites list. Players who won't, or can't, are right to walk, and there's no shame in either call. The worst thing you can do is buy it expecting a gentle, accessible action romp, because that is the one player it will actively punish.
Pick the version, and the one thing nobody copied
On versions, the call is easy: the PC port unlocks 60fps and is the finest way to feel that slashing, where the parry timing finally has the frames it needs, while the all-inclusive bundle maxes out the content in one purchase and is the one most people should grab. In the end, the thing no successor has managed to copy is the close-quarters feel of hand-cutting in Blade Mode and trading blows through parry and Zandatsu — the strange logic of a game where stepping into the blade is the safest place to be. Even its most direct rival, Devil May Cry 5, however lavish its combos and however deep its move list, simply cannot serve that specific rush. Plenty have borrowed pieces of it; none have reassembled the whole. Which is why, flaws and all, it still deserves a serious play from anyone who genuinely loves action games — and why it will probably still be getting one a decade from now, handed from one convert to the next like a secret worth keeping.
