According to a PS Blog feature dated May 20, 2026 in its accompanying images, IO Interactive is positioning 007 First Light on PlayStation 5 Pro around one clear upgrade: at launch, the game will use Upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (Upgraded PSSR, PSSR2.0) as its default scaling solution. The studio says the biggest gains show up where image quality usually breaks first, including dense vegetation, cinematic character close-ups, and fine materials like hair and fabric.

This is not about adding a new graphics mode or padding out a settings menu. The change is more direct than that: the default upscaler on PS5 Pro is being replaced with PSSR2.0. Sony Interactive Entertainment describes the upgraded PSSR as a machine learning-based next-generation super-resolution scaling technology designed to reconstruct a sharper, more stable image from a lower internal rendering resolution. IO Interactive's pitch is equally focused: clearer detail, fewer distractions, and a visibly better overall image.

The more important claim is stability. IO Interactive repeatedly says the upgraded PSSR cuts down on edge shimmer and flickering artifacts, especially in scenes full of fine geometry and high-frequency detail. The team also says image coherence holds up better during camera pans and fast player movement between cover, helping moving objects stay clearer instead of breaking apart into blur or noise.

For a 007 game that leans on a cinematic presentation, that matters. If hair softens in close-up shots or fabric starts to sparkle unnaturally, the intended polish drops fast. If PSSR really does suppress those issues, the benefit will not be limited to comparison screenshots. It should be something players notice throughout normal play.

IO Interactive technical director Henrik Schlichter says the upgraded PSSR delivers broad, meaningful image-quality gains, with a cleaner, more stable, and sharper picture, particularly in fine details. Just as notable, the studio says the integration cost was small from a development standpoint. Its engineers completed the implementation in record time, and the base output was already strong enough that the team did not need extensive scene-by-scene tuning across 007 First Light's wide range of environments and lighting conditions.

Chief rendering engineer Jon Rocatis was even more specific: the team needed only about one day to integrate the upgraded PSSR, and it was satisfied with the results quickly. That may be the most valuable signal here. The significance is not limited to 007 First Light itself. If adoption time is short and the results are reliable, more PS5 Pro games could end up treating this as the default path. Right now, Sony needs technology developers can adopt quickly, not just another stack of impressive-sounding features on paper.

Still, this is not the moment to overstate it. Every conclusion so far comes from official messaging and developer testimony. The real test will be post-launch footage and side-by-side comparisons, especially in performance mode, where frame-rate stability and heavy scenes tend to expose the limits of any upscaling solution. Promotional imagery has always been kinder than live gameplay.

The buying advice, then, is straightforward. If you already plan to play 007 First Light on PS5 Pro, this is clearly the version the developer defines as the best visual experience. If you are playing on a standard PS5, Xbox, or PC, there is no reason to panic: the official plan is to keep using FSR3.1.5 on those platforms, which IO Interactive says remains its preferred super-resolution solution outside PS5 Pro.

What this does not prove yet is whether 007 First Light alone is worth buying a PS5 Pro for. It is too early to make that call. What is clear is that IO Interactive chose to prioritize default image quality rather than burying the upgrade in a flashy menu option, and that is the right focus.
