Assassin's Creed Hexe Loses Two Directors in Two Months, Can It Still Launch in 2027?

Ubisoft looks genuinely unsettled this time. Not long after Assassin’s Creed: Hexe was revealed, key leaders began leaving: game director Benoit Richer and creative director Clint Hocking both exited within two months, which makes the planned 2027 launch feel increasingly uncertain.

Richer confirmed on LinkedIn that he has left Ubisoft to found an independent studio, marking a complete break from Hexe. Earlier, Hocking had already stepped away from the team, and Jean Guesdon has now taken over as creative director. For a AAA project still in mid-development, losing two core creative leads is bound to have major impact.

Hexe was originally announced by Ubisoft at the end of 2022 as a major project. It is set in the late Holy Roman Empire and may introduce fantasy elements such as witchcraft, a direction that sounded genuinely fresh. But the current situation suggests Ubisoft’s internal talent drain is worse than expected. From Black Flag to Origins to Valhalla, veteran experience has been crucial to the series’ continuity, and abrupt leadership changes can easily derail that balance.

Compared with the delay turmoil around Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Hexe is in an even more delicate position. Ubisoft has repeatedly adjusted release schedules in recent years, and player confidence is close to exhausted. If Hexe runs into more trouble, the Assassin’s Creed brand could take real damage. At this point, everything depends on whether Guesdon can stabilize development and get the project back on track. As for whether we will see the game on schedule in 2027, I remain cautious.
