*Bloodborne* Is Suddenly Getting an Anime Adaptation! Fans Are Already at Each Other’s Throats

Last night I was just chatting with my roommate about Bloodborne, and today I came across new news about it—it blew up just like someone suddenly losing their mind in the group chat in the middle of the night. Sony has announced that an animated project based on the PS4 game Bloodborne has officially entered production, and the news was revealed on the first day of CinemaCon 2026. The big point is pretty intense: it has currently been confirmed as an R-rated animated film, so at the very least, it shouldn’t be the kind of overly restrained adaptation in terms of tone.

But the player controversy came incredibly fast—maybe even faster than dormmates fighting over the air-conditioner remote. The reason is straightforward: FromSoftware has not yet confirmed any involvement in this production, which has made many longtime fans uneasy. After all, Bloodborne has such a distinctive atmosphere that without the original team’s particular touch, it could easily turn into an adaptation that looks right on the outside but lacks the soul underneath.

The currently known information is actually not that much. The core points mentioned by Variety are basically that the project has started production and that it will be an R-rated animated film. The co-producers include Lyrical Animation, PlayStation Productions, and Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin. Also, key information that will truly determine the film’s ceiling—such as the director and screenwriter—has not yet been announced, so everyone’s concerns are not coming out of nowhere.

The most surprising name this time is actually Jacksepticeye. He has already spoken up on the r/bloodborne forum, saying he is especially excited and adding, “I will do my absolute best to create the greatest adaptation.” His love for Bloodborne is not just a temporary promotional act either—he has long publicly expressed his affection for it and even has three related tattoos. That at least shows he is not merely attaching his name to the project to ride the hype.

Still, reactions in the fan community are very divided. Some people think the news sounds like an absurd April Fools’ joke, while others are bluntly complaining that the movie is coming first, yet the 60fps patch is still nowhere to be seen. I can really understand that feeling. It’s like you’ve been wanting to eat that limited dish at the cafeteria forever, only for the counter to tell you first that new merch has arrived—anyone would get annoyed hearing that. Especially since Bloodborne has been on players’ minds for years, with calls for an upgrade, remake, or patch never really stopping.

Sony Pictures president Sanford Panitch, however, did offer a bit of reassurance, saying the film will be “faithful to the original.” That sounds nice, of course, and from a business standpoint, it is also something that has to be said. But the problem is that what makes Bloodborne truly difficult to adapt has never been simply what the monsters look like. It is the sense of oppression, the mystery, and the experience of players gradually piecing together the truth. If those are handled too shallowly, it will lose its appeal.

Looking at the broader trend, Sony has clearly been continuing to expand its film and television adaptation strategy for its own game IPs in recent years, so it is not surprising that Bloodborne has been pulled into the mix. Lyrical Animation is also currently involved in the production of Death Stranding: Mosquito, which suggests Sony still wants to turn this direction into a long-term effort. And right now, it is still too early to draw a final conclusion. The original report also mentioned that there is still time for further announcements on whether FromSoftware or Hidetaka Miyazaki will be involved, so this wave feels more like the door being opened first, with the truly reputation-defining news still to come.

My own view is simple: this project is worth looking forward to, but don’t pop the champagne just yet. For a work like Bloodborne, which earned its legendary status through atmosphere and worldbuilding, a successful adaptation would be incredibly satisfying, but if it crashes and burns, it will be roasted badly. It’s like picking the wrong team composition when gaming with your dormmates—you know right from the start that you’re going to get yelled at tonight. What is most worth watching now is not a statement about being faithful to the original, but who the director and screenwriter are, and whether FromSoftware will ultimately join the project. As long as those two questions remain unanswered, I think it is totally normal for fans to keep looking forward to it while complaining at the same time, haha.
