Diablo 4’s 900% Gold Bug Has Players Asking if Money Still Matters

According to pcgamer, Diablo 4’s Vessel of Hatred expansion has spawned a broken item called Horadric Seal. Its affix reads “900% increased gold gain while equipped,” and in the current build, that bonus actually works. The exploit spread quickly across the player community following reports on May 9, 2026.

This looks like a textbook tuning mistake: either someone entered 900% where 9.0% should have been, or, as many players suspect, a decimal-point check was missed somewhere in development. The real issue is not just the absurd multiplier, but where it lands. In Diablo 4, higher difficulties already push gold drops up sharply, so stacking that with this item blows past the intended reward curve. Players can farm billions of gold in just a few hours, which no longer counts as a small efficiency gain—it rewrites the limits of the game’s economy.

The reason this Bug spread so fast is simple: it hits the tightest resource bottleneck in the current version. Players have long complained that many progression systems in Diablo 4 are extremely gold-hungry. Rerolling a single item affix can cost millions of gold, and the newly added endgame mode’s skill tree reset can cost more than 40 million gold. When a game builds heavy gold sinks without a sufficiently smooth income curve, the community will naturally treat any high-yield exploit as compensation.

That leaves Blizzard in an awkward spot. The original report also notes that Diablo 4 has already had heavily exploited issues before, including gear setups capable of infinite damage and certain dungeons that could be farmed for gear at abnormally high efficiency. A one-off incident can be blamed on testing oversight. But when high-reward exploits keep colliding with the core progression loop, it points to obvious gaps in patch validation and balance regression testing, with at least some signs of rushed work or carelessness.

From a business and systems-design perspective, this Bug also exposes the endgame pacing in Vessel of Hatred. A mature seasonal loot game can let players progress quickly, but it should not let one broken affix invalidate the gold economy, because gold is supposed to regulate rerolls, resets, and experimentation. The fact that many players now believe a few hours of farming will leave them effectively set for gold says a lot: under normal conditions, the pressure is already too high, and the Bug merely makes that imbalance visible.

If you are still pushing endgame content, the more important question is not whether this item remains farmable for a little longer, but whether Blizzard follows up by adjusting gold costs or clawing back abnormal gains. In live-service games, fixing the Bug is the likely outcome. Fixing the underlying gold shortage is not. For Diablo 4, the real takeaway is not how ridiculous 900% looks on paper, but why a single number error could instantly become the community’s default best answer. That is a sign of how fragile the entire economy has become.
