*Dragon’s Dogma 2*’s 77GB Update Was Deleted in Seconds — Is DLC Really on the Way?

On April 15, a string of unusual changes in the Steam backend for Dragon’s Dogma 2 instantly pulled the player community into “datamining-style speculation” mode. According to SteamDB records, at 09:56 Beijing time, a massive 77.75GB asset package was first pushed to the test branch; then at 10:10, the entire batch was deleted, looking very much like an emergency rollback. More interestingly, at 10:28 the test branch was rebuilt and loaded with a new 59.68GB test asset package. By 13:25, it had been updated to Changelist #35231411, and this 59.68GB version still remains the current main test build. There has been no official response yet, but this pattern of uploading a huge package, withdrawing it, and then re-uploading core content really does resemble a fairly substantial backend asset reorganization by the development team.

If we treat this operation as a “sandbox incident,” players naturally fall into two camps. The first, more optimistic view is that this may not be simple patching at all, but rather the reservation of content hooks for a major DLC. The second is more cautious, arguing that it could just be asset cleanup and version replacement within the test branch, and that a large file size does not necessarily mean new story content. The issue is that since launch, much of the controversy around Dragon’s Dogma 2 has centered on its story pacing and ending. Many players feel it built a compelling world without truly bringing the narrative to a proper conclusion, so whenever a large-scale backend update like this appears, the community’s first reaction naturally locks onto the idea of a “completion-style DLC.”

Player comments have been very direct. On one side: “If this really is DLC, I’m going all in on Dragon’s Dogma!” On the other: “Please don’t let it just be fixes—I’m begging for DLC to finish the half-baked story!” Those reactions actually say a lot: people are not simply asking for more maps and monsters, but hoping Capcom will push this highly systems-driven open-world adventure one step further into a more complete experience. Its vocations, Pawn cooperation, and field encounters already have a strong “simulation sandbox” feel. As long as the story gets a more solid payoff, reception to a major expansion would likely be strong.

Looking at broader trends, quite a few Japanese developers now restore a game’s reputation after launch through expansions or major updates, so it would not be surprising if Dragon’s Dogma 2 took the same path. At this stage, however, all discussion still remains at the level of Steam backend activity. The only thing that can be confirmed is that a large-scale test package replacement did indeed occur; it cannot be treated as a direct DLC announcement. For players who have not bought the game yet and care a lot about story completeness, my suggestion is to keep watching for an official statement. For those already playing, though, this update can at least be taken as a positive sign—it shows Capcom is still actively working on this content rather than leaving it completely untouched.

What I personally care about more is not whether this 59.68GB package is officially called DLC, but whether it can turn the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 from “fun but unfinished” into “a complete adventure worth revisiting again and again.” If formal news does arrive later, this wave of Steam backend changes may well prove to have been the clearest shift in the clouds before the storm.
