GTA 6 Called Boring by Clair Obscur Expedition 33 Director Sparks Debate

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 technical director Tom Guillermin used an appearance on Konbini France's Video Game Club to say plainly that he does not like Rockstar games. Guillermin said he finds both GTA and Red Dead Redemption boring, and said he is probably one of the few people in the world who is not looking forward to GTA6 at all, which he said is due on November 19. Coming from the technical lead of a roughly 30-person studio, that is the kind of comment that was always going to get attention.

His reasoning, at least, was specific. Guillermin said that when he plays GTA or Red Dead Redemption, he usually just turns on cheats, causes some chaos, gets killed by the police, and quits within 30 minutes. For him, those games are simply "too boring." It is a harsh judgment, but not a vague one.

The more useful distinction is that he is not dismissing Rockstar's technical chops. Guillermin is a technical lead at a small studio of about 30 people, working on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which is entering the market at a lower price and with a more compact scope. He has also said before that only Rockstar Games has the ability to meet that level of production demand. In other words, his issue is with the design direction, not with Rockstar's production or technical muscle.

That distinction matters. The point is not really whether Rockstar's games are good or bad, but that blockbuster scale does not automatically mean better value for every player. A huge budget and top-tier tech are one thing. Whether that works for someone with limited free time is a separate question.

That also lines up with how Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is being positioned. It is being sold on a lower price and a tighter runtime, which makes the studio's philosophy pretty clear. Rockstar's model is the opposite: huge budgets, huge amounts of content, and worlds built for long-term investment. Neither approach is inherently wrong, but they serve very different habits.

So the practical takeaway is fairly clear. Players who love open worlds and are happy to sink dozens of hours into them will still be watching GTA6 for both its scale and what it can do technically. Guillermin himself said that even if he is not excited for it, he is curious about what that enormous budget will achieve on the technical side. But for people whose game time is scarce, a tighter, faster-paced game can easily feel like the better deal.

In that sense, this is less a right-versus-wrong argument than a clash between two ways of playing. On one side is Rockstar's all-in blockbuster formula. On the other is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with its lower price and tighter scope. For players short on time, the real question is not which side is louder. It is which one feels more worth your time.
