Has *Fable 4* Been Delayed Again—Is *GTA6* Really Putting the Pressure On?
When it comes to the name Fable, as a player who has been playing since the old-school RPG era, I do have some attachment to it. It may not be as weighty as The Elder Scrolls, but it has a kind of charm that sits somewhere between a fairy tale and dark humor, like those eccentric swordsmen in wuxia stories who seem playful and irreverent on the surface, yet hide a sharp edge underneath. Precisely because of that, when I heard that Fable 4 was being rebooted, I kept hoping it would deliver that feeling of “a classic IP with a fresh new spirit,” rather than just coasting on the name alone.

The latest rumor is that Fable 4 may have already been delayed internally. According to the leak, this title is a reboot of the classic RPG Fable series, developed by Xbox-owned Playground Games and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was originally planned for release in fall 2026 on PC, PS5, and XSX. However, insider Jeff Grubb mentioned that a delay does not necessarily mean it will be pushed straight into next year—the team is still trying to launch it this year, but they are quite concerned about GTA6’s release window.

Back to the game itself, if a title really has to make way for GTA6, I can honestly understand it. Today’s market is no longer what it used to be, where “you make your game, I sell mine.” Once a game on the scale of GTA6 locks in its schedule, other studios adjusting their timing is like avoiding a peerless martial arts master just before a grand tournament—realistic, but also somewhat helpless. The rumor even claims that if Fable 4 is pushed back until after GTA6, its release window could slip to December, and it’s not impossible that it could slide even further into 2027.
But looking at this calmly, the biggest thing players should take away from this is not to let emotions run ahead of the facts. As of now, these are still just claims from insiders, and there has been no official confirmation. Nor is Fable 4 the only game affected by this kind of speculation. Microsoft’s Call of Duty 23: Modern Warfare 4 is rumored to want to launch a month earlier, while Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider: Atlantis Ruins is also said to have been delayed to February 12, 2027. It’s clear that the entire industry is watching GTA6 very closely.

Beyond nostalgia, what I care about more is whether Fable 4 will actually be worth the wait. Playground Games certainly has a solid foundation in making open worlds, but being able to craft beautiful scenery does not necessarily mean they can make an RPG with real soul. What this series fears most is not being a little late, but spending years in development only to end up serving a giant map plus a checklist of quests. That would truly break veteran players’ hearts. For those thinking about jumping in on day one, my advice is simple: first look at the official release date, then look at gameplay footage and system showcases—don’t let words like “reboot” and “the return of a classic IP” win you over too early.

Judging from the trend, it will probably become more and more common over the next year or two for major titles to avoid going head-to-head with blockbuster giants. It’s not that anyone is cowardly; it’s that development costs and marketing pressure have reached a point where no one can afford to be reckless. But as players, what we ultimately hope is that if Fable 4 really is delayed, it’s so the developers can sharpen its blade and reclaim its soul—not simply to stay out of the spotlight. After all, when a classic IP returns to the fray, the worst thing is not arriving late—the worst thing is failing to live up to expectations.
