Final Fantasy Is Running Out of Time to Win Over the Next Generation

Jacob Navrock, former Director of Business Development at Square Enix, has sounded the alarm: Final Fantasy faces the same existential challenge as Star Wars. The core fanbase is aging out, and younger players simply aren't biting.

The numbers back it up. Data shows that 77% of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth players in the US are over 30, with more than 60% exceeding 35. That's not a niche—that's a generational gap with teeth.

Today's teenagers aren't circling Final Fantasy's narrative-driven, single-player format. They're on Roblox, Fortnite, watching influencer content, or playing AI-powered titles that didn't exist a decade ago. The entertainment landscape has shifted underneath Square Enix's feet.

Series producer Yoshida Naoki has acknowledged the gap. Long gaps between mainline entries mean younger players graduate before the next game arrives, making it nearly impossible to build lasting IP loyalty.

There's a deeper tension too. Longtime fans want classic Final Fantasy DNA—deliberate pacing, rich storytelling. Newer audiences want fast loops and social features. Balancing both isn't easy.

This isn't unique to Final Fantasy. Star Wars films have drawn primarily older audiences, with The Mandalorian & Grogu underperforming at the box office, unable to break through to broader demographics.

Possible paths forward include lighter spin-offs, more frequent content drops, or entirely new formats. Collaborating with influencers and streamers could also help—today's cultural momentum often flows through KOL channels rather than traditional marketing.

Whether Final Fantasy can thread the needle remains uncertain. But having someone articulate the problem openly? That's a start.
