*GTA4* Gets a New Lease on Life with Free Mods! Liberty City Finally Runs Smoothly Again

If we were to pull the GTA series out and rank it again, I’ve always felt that GTA4 is underestimated by a lot of people. It doesn’t have the more flamboyant entertainment style of The Ballad of Three Men and a Dog, nor does it come with the built-in nostalgia filter of GTA: San Andreas, but Liberty City’s oppressive, realistic, and slightly cold-edged character still holds up remarkably well today. Especially in terms of physics feedback, character development, and urban atmosphere, this game still has its own sense of pace and impact even now.

The issues are also very real: the original GTA4, when placed in a modern PC environment, already feels strained in both visual presentation and performance. More importantly, former Rockstar developers have long made it clear that “this game will not receive an official remaster.” That means players who love Niko and Liberty City can no longer expect the official team to come back and make it happen; instead, it’s the faster-moving community creators who are truly breathing new life into this old game.

Right now, the most worthwhile thing to install first is Fusion Fix for GTA4: Complete Edition. This MOD is available for free on NexusMods, and its value goes far beyond simply “being installable and runnable.” The community team has bundled together fixes for technical issues, bugs, and performance limitations that the official version never fully resolved over the years, while also preserving the core feel of the original as much as possible. On top of that, it improves compatibility for both DLCs as well. For players who want a stable return to Liberty City, this feels more like a “track tuning” upgrade—nothing flashy, but smoother every lap.

If you care more about visual impact, then the RTX Remix ray tracing MOD, which has been getting a lot of attention this year, is clearly a different route. Its focus is on a full-scale graphics upgrade, using ray tracing to reshape Liberty City’s streets, lighting, and reflections, delivering visual impact that feels a generation ahead of the original. However, this kind of solution is also very demanding on PC hardware. If you want it to look great, your hardware needs to keep up—otherwise the experience can easily shift from stunning to frustrating.

In terms of positioning, these two free MODs actually have very clear roles. Fusion Fix is ideal for players who want to preserve the original flavor while also enjoying smoother performance on modern systems; RTX Remix is better suited for those who want to experience GTA4 as a graphics upgrade project. My advice is straightforward: most players should install Fusion Fix first, then decide whether to go for the ray tracing version based on the strength of their graphics card. That keeps the investment low and the return the most reliable.

More interestingly, this also points to a trend: the “second life cycle” of classic games is increasingly dependent on player communities rather than official developers. Rockstar choosing not to make a remaster doesn’t mean GTA4 should be locked away in the past; on the contrary, free MODs have already given it a fresh chance to set off again. For players who still haven’t returned to Liberty City on a modern PC, now may be the best time to get started.
