Guilty Gear -Strive- Jam returns! Can close-range burst damage still turn the tide?
The other day, while I was scrolling through the Guilty Gear -Strive- 2.0 update info, the moment I saw Jam's return felt like suddenly spotting a small path to the old town at the edge of the map. When it comes to classic characters making a comeback, what I care about most has never been just nostalgia, but whether they can truly open up the space of a match again. This time, Arc System Works' answer is clearly more than simply “bringing her back.”

This returning Jam comes from the early roster of the Guilty Gear series, having first appeared in Guilty Gear X, and she will officially join the game with the Guilty Gear -Strive- 2.0 version in April 2026. Players can purchase this DLC character separately, or unlock her directly through the Season 5 Pass. Launching alongside the character are a brand-new battle stage, “Cradled by the Four Beasts,” and an exclusive theme song, making it clear that the overall package is being treated with the full fan-favorite returning character treatment.

Following that line of thought, what makes Jam truly interesting is that she is not the type who slowly chips away with long reach and safe pokes. She belongs to the rare group of bare-handed fighters in the series, with a playstyle centered on flexible combos, close-range pressure, and capitalizing on counterattack windows. Her exclusive system, “Asa no Kokyuu,” can enhance her special moves with effects such as increased damage, faster startup, and even additional invincibility frames. It feels like suddenly getting a shortcut map in a piece of complex terrain, instantly opening routes that originally required a long detour.
Her move set also makes this very clear. Skills like “Ryujin,” “Gekirin,” and “Kenroukaku” respectively cover situations such as aerial combos, mid-hitting rushdowns, and rising dragon-style counters. Add in countering tools like “Houfu,” and although Jam’s defense is only average, her ability to withstand pressure is far from weak. Once she gets into position, the speed at which she can turn a match around is extremely fast. What makes a character like this so exciting to play is that she does not simply bulldoze forward; instead, she creates that sudden sense of accelerating pressure in a narrow path.

But beyond the map metaphor, Jam does not come without a price. Her attack hitbox range is relatively short, and in many situations she has to rely on dashes, jumps, or even more aggressive movement to contest space. Once she runs into characters who excel at zoning with projectiles, the process of advancing can become very frustrating. You can think of the experience as knowing full well there is a resource point on the other side of the mountain, but everything in between is open ground with no cover—just making the run over is a stress test in itself. That is why she is better suited to players who are willing to make proactive reads, dare to stay in the opponent’s face, and are ready to spend time mastering combo rhythm.

If you already own the Season 5 Pass, then there is almost no reason to hesitate with this update—just jump in and try her out. If you are a player who buys DLC separately, my recommendation is very straightforward: if you enjoy close-range burst damage, counterplay mind games, and high-mobility pressure, she is worth picking up; if you rely more on mid- to long-range control, or do not like repeatedly taking risks just to get in, then it is better to watch some real match footage before deciding. For Guilty Gear -Strive-, Jam’s return is not just about filling out the roster with a popular character; it feels more like opening up a new high-risk, high-reward zone on the existing battlefield—and those willing to step into it will usually walk away with more.
