Second Lead Designer Departs Tekken 8 Within Six Months
Kohei Ikeda, the game director behind Tekken 8, has announced his departure from Bandai Namco through personal social media. In a brief statement, he said, "After an incredible 20 years, I have left Bandai Namco Studios. Thank you all for your continued support."
Ikeda was a central figure in the franchise's character balance and design work across multiple installments. His exit arrives at a delicate moment: Tekken 8's post-launch balance adjustments have fueled ongoing debate among the competitive community, and now the series loses another key architect.
The timing is notable. Ikeda's departure follows that of Katsuhiro Harada, the franchise's longtime producer and public face, who announced his exit in late 2025. Within six months, Bandai Namco's fighting game division has now lost both of its most recognizable names. No successor has been named for either role, leaving the studio's transition period the subject of industry scrutiny.
Community response splits between caution and cautious optimism. Hardcore players worry that repeated upheaval could slow seasonal update cadence and destabilize the growing esports infrastructure. Others argue that fresh leadership might bring new design philosophies to a series that, despite its commercial success, has faced heat over its balance philosophy.
Bandai Namco has not commented on succession plans. What comes next—for Ikeda personally and for Tekken collectively—will be worth watching.
