Marvel's Wolverine Launches With New Game+ - Insomniac's Smart Play
Insomniac's Wolverine Breaks Sony's Post-Launch DLC Pattern With Day-One New Game+
Insomniac Games confirmed that Marvel's Wolverine will ship with New Game+ on day one—no post-launch patch required. The decision puts it ahead of most other first-party Sony titles, which typically add the feature weeks or months after release. Game director Mike Daly put it plainly: players who finish the main story can immediately jump into a second playthrough if they want.
The timing is notable. New Game+ modes are usually patched in later, sometimes to extend the marketing window. Insomniac doing the opposite suggests production discipline. It also addresses a core player complaint—finishing a game and having nothing left to do—without making fans wait for a download.
Making New Game+ actually different is the harder part. The second playthrough will feature faster pacing, deadlier enemies, and more aggressive combat. Players can also unlock content that alters the gameplay. The team built or rebalanced substantial content for the repeat run—not just bumped enemy health. That Insomniac delivered it at launch is notable.
For comparison, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Ghost of Tsushima both received New Game+ via updates weeks after release. Sony's staggered approach has commercial logic—keeping release momentum alive. But "full game on day one" tends to generate stronger goodwill than "extra mode in two weeks." That a Sony studio made this call suggests confidence in the final product.
All levels support replay with an additional score-challenge system, which isn't unusual for action games. The question is execution: if these systems actually make a second run feel rewarding rather than grindy, Marvel's Wolverine will look considerably more polished than the usual action game at launch.
