According to Comicbook, Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games is one of 2026’s most closely watched games, and it now has a release date: September 15, 2026, exclusively on PS5. The game also got its first proper gameplay reveal at Sony’s recent State of Play, where new combat mechanics were shown, Jean Grey was confirmed as a major character, but one detail quickly dominated the conversation: this is not an open-world game.
What stood out in the new footage was not just the blood. The dim interiors, the clang of metal, and the savage claw work all point to a harsher tone. More importantly, Marvel’s Wolverine does not look built as a simple action spectacle. With Jean Grey taking on a significant role, the game seems to be pushing toward a heavier character-driven tone.
The more contentious point, though, is Insomniac Games’ design choice. In an exclusive interview with IGN, the studio said it never planned for the project to be an open-world or sandbox game in the first place. Instead, it was built around a more story-focused linear structure from the start. That naturally invites comparison with the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, and the concern is easy to understand: without city traversal and a sprawling map, will the experience feel smaller?
According to creative lead Mike Daly, the answer is that the shift fits Logan himself. His restless, drifting nature, along with the tone of his story, is better suited to a game that keeps the story moving through a directed narrative rather than spreading the player across a huge map. The overall pacing has been described as closer to comic-book storytelling, with a tight, dramatic plot delivered through a linear mission flow that moves players through multiple locations as the main story progresses.

That does not mean the game will just be a straight corridor run. Official details say the game will still leave room for strategy and player choice in combat, stealth, and how they handle each encounter. As the story advances, players will unlock distinct new environments, each with its own layout and exploration logic. Those spaces are built around Wolverine’s specific abilities, letting players use his claws and healing factor for stealth breakouts, tactical exploration, and brutal direct combat.
From what has been shown so far, Insomniac at least seems to understand one essential point: Wolverine should not feel like Spider-Man. Compared with the lighter, more agile combat style of the Marvel’s Spider-Man games, this project is leaning into a more brutal, hard-edged violent aesthetic. That difference is not just welcome, it feels necessary. A version of Logan reduced to clearing side markers across a map would strip the character of his edge almost immediately.

The split in reaction is fairly easy to parse. Fans who prefer open worlds will worry about long-term variety and replay value. Players who care more about tone and a tighter story may come away more excited precisely because the game is narrower in scope. Given Insomniac’s past command of presentation and combat feedback in the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, a linear Marvel’s Wolverine is not automatically a downside. The real question is whether the studio can fuse mission-to-mission progression, stealth systems, and violent combat into one coherent whole before September 15, 2026, when the game is expected to launch on PS5. For now, that is the part worth watching.
