Microsoft's Next Xbox May Go Open Platform — Asus and MSI Could Build Consoles

Microsoft's next-gen Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, might not be a Microsoft-only product anymore. The Helix SoC could be licensed to PC manufacturers like ASUS and MSI, meaning you might soon see ROG-branded or MSI-branded Xbox consoles at your local electronics store.

Helix uses an AMD-based solution with support for FSR Diamond and AI-driven neural rendering. Microsoft's plan is to let OEM partners build custom devices around the same chip—combining console-style plug-and-play with the design flexibility of prebuilt PCs. The chip won't be sold separately, and Microsoft will still release its own first-party Helix console.

The strategy echoes the handheld boom that followed Steam Deck. Microsoft likely noticed how well devices like ROG Ally performed and wants to expand the Xbox ecosystem similarly. If ASUS delivers a version with better cooling and stronger specs, weekend gaming sessions could feel noticeably smoother than on the standard model.

Pricing will be the deciding factor. If OEM versions cost significantly more than Microsoft's official hardware, the value proposition collapses. Multiple manufacturers also raise questions about support consistency and system update coordination. The leak comes from industry insider KeplerL2, so official confirmation is still pending.

The direction itself is promising—more player choice mirrors the laptop market where brand preference matters. As long as Microsoft avoids Android-level fragmentation, developers won't face a compatibility nightmare. The concept works if execution stays disciplined.
