Phantom Blade Zero optimization struggles as a new European engine attempts a fix

Ex-Epic programmer and Guerrilla co-founder Arjan Brussee has partnered with a Dutch startup to develop The Immense Engine, a direct challenger to Unreal Engine 5. The project accelerates as UE5’s optimization debt becomes impossible to ignore, recently highlighted by performance struggles in Metal Gear Solid 3: Reboot. Rather than patching the existing pipeline, teams behind Phantom Blade Zero and Arc Raiders are already disabling core UE5 systems just to sustain baseline framerates.

The new tool is explicitly positioned as a “Made in Europe” alternative. Its architecture integrates AI agent modules directly into the core workflow, allowing smaller teams to automate rendering and logic tasks that typically require ten to fifteen dedicated programmers. Large language model functionality is also designed for straightforward integration rather than fragile third-party bridges. This shift addresses a practical bottleneck: mid-sized studios no longer need to choose between visual fidelity and schedule stability, provided the underlying tools actually cooperate.

Commercial viability is only half the equation. The roadmap explicitly targets non-entertainment sectors like logistics, where real-time simulation and AI routing could offset long-term development costs and justify the initial build phase. Industry analysts argue that the primary value of a functional rival is structural pressure. If the engine reaches public beta, it should force Epic to allocate dedicated engineering resources toward optimization in its next major release, rather than treating performance improvements as optional add-ons or post-launch patches.

The recommendation is clear. Treat early architectural promises with caution and wait for verified tech demos before adjusting production pipelines or committing budgets. The engine market rarely produces immediate replacements, but credible competition reliably forces incumbents to stop deprioritizing performance. We will keep tracking the public roadmap and benchmark results. If this tool finally decouples narrative pacing from rendering overhead, it deserves sustained industry attention.
