Can *Bloodborne* finally be played? Has shadPS4 really crossed the threshold this time?

If you’ve always treated the PS4 emulator as a “tech geek’s expedition log,” then this recent update really does feel like the team has finally crossed the first true ridge. shadPS4 recently released version 0.15.0, and the key themes are not flashy features, but two simpler—and more important—things: stability and compatibility.

That’s also why I’d rather see this as a milestone where “the foundation construction is complete,” rather than just another version number bump. According to the project’s public information, some PS4 games can now successfully boot and even run, including Bloodborne, Dark Souls Remastered, Red Dead Redemption, Yakuza 0, and Driveclub. For players following emulator progress, seeing these titles appear on the playable list is itself highly symbolic.

More importantly, 0.15.0 does not stop at surface-level improvements. This time, the development team continued strengthening the underlying architecture: the kernel and file system received major optimizations, key system calls were added, signal handling was improved, and thread- and memory-related issues were fixed; data structures were also refactored, making the directory layout clearer and critical operations safer. In other words, this is not about forcing a door open, but about rebuilding the entire road leading to it.

The graphics-side improvements are just as practical. After optimizing GPU shader recompilation, visual stability is better, the shader system supports more operations, and flickering and rendering errors have been noticeably reduced. With stronger system library emulation, compatibility has improved further; audio and controller support have also been enhanced, while parts of the networking and system libraries now fix issues that occurred in offline mode, along with a good number of Windows-side bugs. On top of that, the logging system has been optimized, which should further improve debugging and development efficiency.

For many players, Bloodborne is still the main concern. The game had already shown clear improvements in earlier versions, and this update feels more like it has “nailed down” those existing achievements. It still cannot simply be understood as a perfect solution for a full playthrough, because the article also makes it clear that the emulator remains in an experimental stage. But the hardest stretch between “it can display an image” and “it’s gradually approaching everyday usability” is often exactly this kind of seemingly unspectacular stability work.

If you compare it against the broader history of emulator development, you’ll find that what truly determines a project’s lifespan is usually not whether a single game suddenly starts running, but whether the underlying framework can continue supporting more titles. shadPS4’s advantage lies in being fully open source and supporting Windows, Linux, and macOS; progress across multiple platforms also means more room for community collaboration. The development team has even said that the upcoming 0.15.1 version will bring even larger-scale changes, with the goal of gradually reaching a level of stability suitable for “daily use.”

So my judgment is simple: this is not yet the time for ordinary players to jump in blindly and start tinkering, but it has reached the stage where it is worth following closely and even beginning to test the waters. For the emulation prospects of Bloodborne and the broader PS4 library, this 0.15.0 update feels less like an endpoint and more like the first night after the bonfire has finally been lit—the road ahead is still long, but at least it is no longer completely dark.
