Valve's Steam Machine delayed by supply chain issues, controller now available separately

Valve has confirmed the next-generation Steam Machine is delayed due to RAM shortages, storage constraints, and rising costs, with no firm release date despite an initial target of early 2026. Meanwhile, the new Steam Controller launched on May 4.

The rollout mirrors Nintendo's approach with Switch accessories shipping ahead of the console. Last November, Valve unveiled three products at once—the Steam Machine, Steam Controller, and Steam Frame—leading many to expect a bundled launch like the PS5. Then AI demand spiked in late 2024, sending storage prices through the roof. By early February, Valve admitted publicly it couldn't set pricing or commit to a timeline.

The entire industry faces the same bind. Valve's engineering team noted in their statement that "no one wants to encounter such external challenges when a product is near completion"—a frustration that rings true when hardware debugging is done but material supply becomes the bottleneck. Still, they'd always planned to ship the Steam Controller first, so this isn't a last-minute pivot.

This delay exposes supply chain fragility in the PC handheld market. The original Steam Deck faced months of chip shortage delays, and now the Steam Machine hits similar roadblocks. For early adopters, waiting makes sense—if Valve can't even quote a price, cost volatility hasn't settled and launch pricing could run high. The Steam Controller is worth grabbing now since it works with existing Steam Decks and PCs, so at least that's 1 out of 11 announced features you can actually use.
