Ubisoft now asks US players for state info—here's what's behind it

From April 30, 2026, Ubisoft's 3,000-plus million U.S. users will receive a notice that looks routine but marks a shift: their account profiles now require a State field. The system auto-fills based on your last server connection; if it can't determine your location, the field stays blank and you fill it manually. Ubisoft frames it narrowly—compliance with local regulations, no ad or marketing use—but the act itself redraws state lines across the digital map.

This is really a window into how fractured U.S. digital identity regulation has become. Fifty states, fifty sets of age verification and privacy laws. If you want to operate nationwide, you assemble compliance like a jigsaw. Steam already does this; Ubisoft is catching up. But when a global gaming platform starts managing user data by state, the "borderless internet" idea collapses—what games you access, what content you see, even whether you can register may hinge on living in California versus Texas.

The deeper question is whether this compliance pattern becomes the norm. Today it's state info; tomorrow it could be age verification, ID binding, proof of residence. Companies will say it's about protecting minors or following the law, but players experience it as more forms and less freedom. Ubisoft's move isn't aggressive, but it's a signal—digital borders are being redrawn, and players can only accept it passively.

Narratively, there's no drama here: an email, a required field, a line about compliance. But it exposes the industry's most awkward position—maintaining a global user experience while navigating increasingly granular local rules. Ubisoft isn't the first to do this and won't be the last. For players, though, every new field chips away at the feeling that game worlds are sanctuaries. That's the real loss.
