The Witcher 3 is finally getting its first expansion since 2015, and CD Projekt Red is going all in. Shadows of the Past—the fan-translated name for Old Tunes, the working title du jour—promises 25 to 40 hours of fresh content, lands on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027, and carries a scope comparable to Blood and Wine, the expansion that arguably saved the base game's legacy.

Former Bungie VP Mark Nosworthy, who oversaw the Destiny franchise, called the move "a great idea" for more than one reason. He argues it puts The Witcher back in the conversation—and that's critical when a generation of players was too young to touch Wild Hunt back in 2015. For CDPR, it's a calculated play: re-engage veterans with proven content, then hand the keys to newcomers who never experienced the original hype cycle.

Fool's Theory, the studio currently working on the Witcher remake, is co-developing Shadows of the Past. Nosworthy sees this as a proving ground. "They're getting invaluable experience before potentially taking on larger franchise responsibilities," he noted in comments reported by gaming outlets. It's a vote of confidence from someone who understands what it takes to sustain a long-running series—and more importantly, CDPR wouldn't hand its flagship IP to an outside studio without believing that team had already cleared a very high bar.

The timing is deliberate. Blood and Wine proved that CDPR's expansion strategy could be both critically acclaimed and commercially lucrative, extending the game's tail well beyond launch. By framing Shadows of the Past as a "full expansion" rather than a standard DLC drop, the company is signaling ambition—not a quick content bump, but a substantial addition worthy of the Witcher name. The 2027 window also makes strategic sense: it keeps the franchise visible in the lead-up to The Witcher 4, maintaining community engagement and building momentum for whatever comes next.

On the narrative side, details remain thin. Players will step back into Geralt's boots for a new story, but specific plot details are under wraps. Given that the protagonist's fate in The Witcher 4 remains unresolved, Shadows of the Past could serve a connective function—laying groundwork or addressing lingering threads. Whether it ultimately functions as a bridge to the next mainline entry or a standalone adventure remains to be seen.

For players who missed Wild Hunt's 2015 moment, this expansion represents a clean entry point. The original game has aged well, but jumping into a decade-old RPG alongside fresh, headline-worthy content is far more appealing than catching up on legacy titles in isolation.
