“Ever wanted to run your own Jurassic Park and watch a park full of biting, fence-jumping dinosaurs come alive? This nails that fantasy, with the original cast and score for full nostalgia — just don't come expecting deep number-crunching management; come for the dinosaurs and the films.”

Nosso veredito

A sequel the scores undersell and the players keep aloft

Lay every objective marker side by side and the game's position comes into focus. A 76 on Metacritic, a 78.8 across eighty-one OpenCritic reviews in the Strong tier, a 72 from five outlets on IGDB — three sites pointing at the same verdict: a solid, dependable sequel that never quite reaches greatness. The player camp runs a good deal hotter, though. More than 38,000 Steam reviews land at 90% Very Positive, throwing a bright light on the seam between the critic number and the lived reputation. The reason isn't hard to read: reviewers grade against a ruler of systemic depth, players grade against whether the dinosaurs feel alive, the park looks the part, and the disasters land — and that second thing is exactly where this game refuses to be vague. The split between those two scoring systems is, in its own way, the cleanest summary of what this game is and isn't.

Who should buy in, and who should step around it

This isn't a game for everyone, and the thing to settle before you spend is which camp you fall into. Two kinds of people should buy. The fans who grew up on the Jurassic films, and the people who simply love watching dinosaurs. If what you want is the satisfaction of personally playing park warden — raising those familiar giants one more time — rather than a management report calculated to two decimal places, this game will please you deeply.

The one to step around is the hardcore management gourmand chasing peak economic numbers and total creative freedom: the depth and the customisation room both fall shy of the ceiling, and Frontier's own Planet Zoo will scratch both itches more fully. Put bluntly, what's on sale here is the fantasy of being a Jurassic Park warden, not the crown of best-in-class management sim. Match your expectations to that and the experience clicks into place. The mismatch only ever bites the player who walked in wanting the wrong thing — someone after a deep economic puzzle will feel the systems run out of road, while someone who wanted living dinosaurs and cinematic disaster will feel handsomely served. Knowing which of those you are is genuinely the difference between a 6 and a 9 in your own head.

Which edition to grab, and what makes it singular

Two practical matters to close on: which edition, and what actually keeps people here. On editions, the base game is plenty to taste whether this is your kind of thing; if it hooks you on contact and you're a dino lover, the Dominion Biosyn expansion is close to essential, lifting the experience markedly with feathered species and a fresh campaign.

As for what ultimately holds players among a crowded field of management games, the answer isn't any one system done especially deep. It's the singular strain of tension: you aren't raising docile exhibits, you're raising creatures that pack-hunt, break out, and stampede en masse through a storm, and you can be kicked from leisurely warden back to crisis fire-chief at any second. That delicate push and pull — everything under control, everything one bad minute from chaos — is something other management games can't hand you, and it's precisely why a game with middling scores stays aloft on the long affection of a great many players. In the end it isn't a flawless management sim, but it is a hard-to-replace Jurassic Park simulator — and the right player, once they sink in, never quite wants to close it.
