A focused GT3 simulation built on realistic endurance pacing and precise AI duels, though uneven console optimization and a slim roster narrow its appeal.

Nosso veredito

Whether Assetto Corsa Competizione is worth dozens of hours of your life depends entirely on what you want to take away from a racing game. It is not a title that announces its quality in the first ten minutes; it is one that only begins to show its hand after the tenth hour.

What it gets gloriously right

If what you want is simulation depth, a dedicated GT3 experience, AI you can seriously spar with, and that endurance-race rhythm where you understand more the longer you drive, it is worth it. The most valuable thing about the game is its willingness to make sacrifices in service of one clear direction. The content does not chase breadth, the narrative does not chase variety, and the visuals do not lean on exaggerated effects to steal the spotlight. Everything is bent toward the serious competitive experience. That conviction is admirable, and its long-term reputation, anchored by a very positive reception and tens of thousands of recommendations, confirms that the focus paid off for the people it was built for. That conviction shows up everywhere once you start looking for it. The pit-stop rhythm, the tyre management, the AI that races by the rules, the soundscape that doubles as a sensor; none of these are bolted on as features to pad a list. They all serve the same goal of making you feel like a real driver doing real work, and the coherence of that vision is genuinely uncommon in a genre that so often chases breadth over depth.

Where the compromises bite

Its problems are not trivial, though. The visual presentation and the optimisation are not entirely on the same side, and the lack of smoothness can drag down the most precious thing a racing game has: the feel of judgement under pressure. On the content front, the focus on GT3 has character, but it also means a narrower audience, and the early shortcomings of the online component affect long-term commitment. Measured against hardcore benchmarks like iRacing and rFactor 2, it has a professional flavour all its own, yet in systemic maturity and certain core experiences it has not fully overtaken them. Measured against Gran Turismo 7, it is clearly harder to approach and more tightly bound in content. None of these comparisons are damning, but together they map out the precise shape of the compromise. You are trading breadth, polish and approachability for a depth of feel that the broader, friendlier alternatives cannot quite match in their chosen category. Whether that trade lands as a strength or a weakness depends entirely on the player holding the wheel, and the game is honest enough never to pretend the trade does not exist.

Who should actually buy it

So it is not a game everyone should play. It is more like a pair of professional racing gloves: used in the right place, the feel is exceptional; worn for a daily commute, they only feel tight. For its target players I am happy to give a clear recommendation. For ordinary players, it is best to first confirm whether you are willing to spend time on the act of driving seriously. If the answer is yes, few games will reward that commitment as honestly as this one. If the answer is no, no amount of fidelity will paper over the friction. The game knows exactly who it is for, and it makes no apology for the rest. That clarity of purpose is, in the end, its defining virtue. It would have been easy to dilute the simulation in pursuit of a wider audience, to soften the physics and pad the garage and smooth every rough edge until the experience pleased everyone a little and no one a lot. Instead it chose to be exceptional at one thing for one kind of player, and it accepted the smaller audience that choice implies. For the right driver, that is not a limitation. It is the whole reason to be here.
