“id Software's reboot nails high-speed shooting with health-from-kills aggression, its campaign laying the groundwork for Eternal”

Nosso veredito

Where it sat in 2016: a textbook series reboot

Wind the clock back to 2016 and this game's arrival was practically a move against the current. The entire console-shooter category was drifting toward cover tactics and multiplayer, and id Software answered with a pure, retro, attack-or-die single-player shooter. It then let the results do the talking: a Metacritic 85, an OpenCritic 86 rated Mighty in the top five percent across platforms, and near-unanimous agreement from critics that this was a remarkable comeback for id Software.

Its place in history is unambiguous — this is a textbook series reboot. It never betrayed the no-nonsense, fast-twitch core of the original Doom; instead it took that twenty-something-year-old formula and reground it razor-sharp with modern technology and design language. For a classic IP gone quiet for years, that balance of staying true to the original's spirit while fully modernizing is the single hardest thing to pull off. Too faithful and it reads as dated; too modern and it loses its soul. This game walks the tightrope strung precisely between the two. Which is why it became the reference sample for countless "classic IP reboot" projects that followed. It proved a point: reviving an old-guard series hinges not on how many new features you pile on but on pinpointing the one irreplaceable core of the original and magnifying it with modern craft.

Who should buy it, who should walk past, and what stays impossible to copy

So who is this for? The answer is plain: the player who wants pure, exhilarating, trade-aggression-for-survival fast-paced single-player shooting. If you are tired of the modern shooter ritual of crouching in cover, waiting on a health bar, and sitting through long cutscenes, and you crave an experience that raises the weapon and charges, that speaks through feel and rhythm, this is about as high as that ceiling goes. It does not ask you to invest emotionally in the plot, only to enjoy the adrenaline loop that gets better the harder you push.

There are a few players who should think twice, though. If you prize narrative depth and want a moving story and characters beyond the shooting, the wafer-thin, one-sentence plot will let you down. If you favor the measured trading rhythm of cover tactics, this design that forces you to never stop moving may simply not sit right. And if you buy shooters chiefly for multiplayer, the mediocre versus modes and the SnapMap editor that never took off will leave you feeling shortchanged. This is a single-player-first game with a sharply defined attitude, and it knows exactly who it serves.

On versions, go straight for the bundle that packs all three DLC and every update, folding in Arcade Mode, Photo Mode, and the multiplayer improvements — though for the vast majority of players the core value lives in that lean campaign, and buying in for the single-player experience alone is money well spent. Commercially it delivered too: launch-week sales trailed only Uncharted 4, and PC copies passed two million by 2017. But its deepest mark is the groundwork it laid for Eternal — the push-forward combat, the health-from-kills loop, and the weapon progression this game codified became the bedrock the whole series evolved from. Looking back now, the thing that stays impossible to copy is still the way it stitches health recovery and resource restock into its executions to force you relentlessly forward. That is not something "good graphics" or "good feel" can capture — it is an entire interlocking system that manufactures a singular flow state where the harder you fight, the longer you live. Plenty of successors have aped its parts; few have reproduced that pure offensive thrill at the same height. For a reboot, setting a benchmark the whole genre turns back to consult is finishing the job and then some.
