“Want a hardcore ocean-survival run with an actual finish line? You build a raft from scratch, hop islands scavenging plane parts, then down a Megalodon and a giant squid to fly off — the goal lands, but the controls are rough and running dry kills you.”

Nosso veredito

Lay every dimension side by side and Stranded Deep reads as a game with a very clear sense of itself: imperfect, often rough, but sure of who it is for and what it offers.

A small studio's seven-year haul

Its place in history is unusual. It hit Steam Early Access in January 2015 and ground away for seven and a half years before the 1.0 release in August 2022. Along the way it grew its island count, added achievements and leaderboards, dropped in a hog and a giant crab, and finally bolted on online co-op — a small-studio game that matured through a long line of free updates.

From Early Access to a finished 1.0

That origin is both its ceiling and its backbone. The ceiling: old foundations and polish that never caught up to a triple-A bar. The backbone: an Australian team, Beam Team Games, who spent seven years proving how seriously they took this one ocean-survival idea — and turned it into a durable mid-tier indie success, north of 1.8 million copies and around 21.8 million dollars.

Read the review gap before you buy

The key to this game is its split reputation. Fourteen critics on OpenCritic settled at 64 with a one-in-five recommendation — "weak" on the dial — while over forty thousand Steam reviews sit near seventy-five percent positive, holding a steady "Mostly Positive."

The gap between player and critic scores

That gap is no accident. Critics fix on the clunky hands, the rough visuals and the lingering bugs, grading it against what a 2022 release ought to deliver, and come away cold. The players who buy in care more about the thing it gets right — survival pressure that genuinely bites, and an ending you can actually reach. Put bluntly, it is not a game built to win over reviewers; it is a game built to win over the right player. Read that way, the score gap is less a contradiction than a filter: the lower the polish matters to you, the closer your verdict will sit to the critics; the more the tension and the finish line matter, the closer you land to the seventy-five percent.

Who should buy it, who should steer clear, and the Subnautica question

So who is it for? If you are a survival regular hungry for a punishing, hardcore ocean run with a real finish line, and you can forgive rough controls and fiddly menus, it will hand you something solid — especially with a friend or two paddling toward escape alongside you. If you want something relaxed, cannot stand sticky hands and clogged menus, and least of all the high death count of dying of thirst before you have grasped the water rule, you will probably be refunding it inside two hours. There is no middle ground; the hardcore streak is right there on the surface, and it will not meet you halfway.

Which leaves the rival you cannot dodge — Subnautica. On depth, on looks, on story, it is the stronger game almost across the board, the genre's reference point. If you only want the single best ocean-survival game, that is still the safer pick. But Stranded Deep was never trying to win that fight head-on. It bet on one thing Subnautica's haunting, open-ended dive never offers — a plane you build with your own hands and fly away in.

That, looking back from 2026, is why it still stands: not because any one part is best in class, but because it made the choice nobody else did, and gave survival a way out. The years since 1.0 have not made it prettier or smoother, and they were never going to — what you buy today is the same rough, sure-footed island it has been. But the idea at its centre has aged well precisely because so few have copied it. Plenty of newer survival games are slicker; almost none of them let you finish. If that finish line is what you have been missing, the clumsy hands and the tropical sameness become a price worth paying, and the plane lifting off the water becomes the thing you remember long after the bugs have faded from memory.
