The limited-edition *007 First Light* controller is here — is it worth grabbing?

What they’ve done first this time is not simply a superficial reskin, but a very typical reconfiguration of IP symbols. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that alongside 007 First Light, it will simultaneously launch the “DualSense Wireless Controller ‘007 First Light’ Limited Edition” on May 27. Limited pre-orders will open at 10:00 on April 17, priced at 12,480 yen, approximately RMB 537. The timing is handled very professionally: hardware accessories and software launch at the same time, essentially packaging and converting game buzz, collector demand, and platform ecosystem value all at once.

From a design perspective, the thinking behind this controller is fairly textbook—it’s not just a matter of casually slapping a 007 logo on it and calling it a day. The main color is metallic gold, with black accents used to tone down any sense of excess, and the visual inspiration is clearly aimed at the Bond franchise’s iconic symbolic language. The grips feature barrel-like textures modeled after gun rifling, the center of the touchpad contains the 007 logo with radiating lines, and the back is printed with “Earn the number,” directly turning the theme of “becoming a 00 agent” into hardware storytelling. On this level, it shows more care than many co-branded peripherals, because it is telling a complete identity-growth story.

Art Director Rasmus Poulsen also explicitly noted that this design pays tribute to more than 60 years of Bond’s screen history, while blending classic legacy and modern sensibility into a single product. The gold finish in particular directly echoes The Man with the Golden Gun from 1974, paying homage to villain Scaramanga’s highly recognizable golden pistol. Technically speaking, SIE has not sacrificed functionality just because this is a limited edition: DualSense’s adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and PC compatibility are all fully retained, and it will also receive deep integration in 007 First Light. That makes it more than just a collectible display piece—it aims to deliver the immersive feeling of “holding 007 in your hands and playing.”

Looking at the business logic, this is also a very solid platform release strategy. 007 First Light is developed by IO Interactive and launches on May 27 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, making it a standard multi-platform action-adventure release; but the limited-edition controller serves only the PS5 ecosystem, turning cross-platform exposure into PlayStation-exclusive hardware premium value. In other words, the game is sold to everyone, while the emotional value is sold to PlayStation users—this layering is handled with great precision. IO comes from the Hitman lineage and excels at stealth, disguise, and level pacing. If 007 First Light can translate those strengths into a more strongly narrative-driven third-person adventure, then its hardware tie-in will truly complete the loop.

If you’re a fan of the 007 series, or were already planning to experience this game at launch on PS5, this price still falls within the usual range for limited-edition controllers and may be worth pre-ordering, especially since the secondary market for limited releases is usually not very friendly. But if you just want a high-performance controller, its core functionality does not go beyond the standard DualSense—the extra money is paying for IP aesthetics and collectible appeal. Put simply, this is not a necessity-driven device, but a highly polished peripheral aimed at emotional identification; from an industry perspective, at the very least it doesn’t feel lazy—on the contrary, it turns the design aspect, which co-branded peripherals are most likely to phone in, into a fairly complete product statement.
