Black Flag RE preorders are strong; what does $60 buy?
Ubisoft said on May 20 that Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Remake is off to a strong preorder start, with the first three weeks ranking among the best in Assassin’s Creed series history. The game is still set for July 9, and Ubisoft CFO Frédérick Duguet made that comment during the earnings Q&A. The message is clear: interest is high, even before launch.

That is easy to understand. Black Flag already has a good reputation, and the pirate setting remains one of the franchise’s most memorable hooks. Ubisoft says this version keeps the original atmosphere while adding more modern systems and a cleaner overall experience, so the pitch is straightforward: preserve what worked, then rebuild it in a more current form.

Still, strong preorder numbers do not guarantee the same result after release. Ubisoft has also made it clear that this is not a full-price blockbuster in the usual recent-series sense. The remake is priced at $60, below the $70 of newer Assassin’s Creed releases, and Ubisoft has not positioned it as a full-price game. That pricing says a lot: this is a controlled-scale remake, not a giant new entry.

What matters even more is scope. Ubisoft has already acknowledged that the game will be smaller than recent AAA entries, which helps set expectations early. For players, the better assumption is simple: this is a project meant to make Black Flag work well again, not to introduce an entirely new formula for the series.
If you never played the original, this is one to watch. The pirate atmosphere, naval combat, and core Assassin’s Creed foundation are still there, and the $60 price is relatively restrained. Longtime fans, though, should keep one thing in mind: the nostalgia is intact, but the content may not have grown with it.
