After Watching This Arson Case, All I Want to Say About *GTA6* Is: Don’t Treat Reality Like a Rage Room

Reality is sometimes more absurd than an open world, but it never has a reload button. On April 10, reports said that in the early hours of the 7th local time, a massive fire suddenly broke out at a large warehouse in Ontario, California, and police later confirmed that it was not an accident, but arson committed by an employee. The suspect is 29-year-old warehouse worker Shamel Abdulkarim, and the cause was his long-standing dissatisfaction with his pay and treatment.

Judging from the scale of the incident, it was almost like an out-of-control “map-level disaster.” The fire started at Kimberly-Clark’s paper products storage center, which covers 111,400 square meters and was packed with highly flammable materials such as toilet paper. The blaze burned continuously for hours and ultimately reduced nearly the entire warehouse to ashes, causing direct losses of about $156 million, or roughly RMB 1.066 billion.

Even more chilling is that this was not a case of someone impulsively setting a fire and running away. He filmed himself throughout the arson and uploaded the videos. While setting the goods ablaze, he repeatedly complained that his income was not enough to sustain his life, and even said things like, “All you have to do is pay us enough to live on.” Losing control emotionally is understandable; deliberately turning that anger against an entire warehouse and countless people’s livelihoods is another matter entirely.

Fortunately, around 20 employees at the scene were evacuated in time, and no one was injured or killed, but that does not mean the consequences were minor. In order to bring the fire under control, the fire department deployed 175 firefighters and 15 fire engines, only managing to contain the situation after battling it for hours. According to public information, the suspect had previously sued a former employer over break times and pay issues, indicating that his resentment was not a temporary outburst, but the result of long-term frustration that finally spiraled out of control.

From the perspective of a narrative familiar to the gaming community, this feels like someone mistook reality for a sandbox world where “the destruction system is interactive,” believing that smashing inventory and burning assets could somehow fulfill a revenge objective. But reality is not GTA6. There is no mission summary, and there is no starting over. Police have already arrested him. He now faces multiple aggravated felony arson charges and has been denied bail. If convicted, he will most likely face a long prison sentence.

This incident also serves as a warning to all onlookers: wage disputes, labor conflicts, and workplace pressure are indeed social problems, but the only way to address them is through complaints, arbitration, litigation, and public oversight—not by turning anger into a sea of fire. Judging from broader trends, global debates over low pay, working hours, and the cost of living have grown increasingly intense in recent years, and emotions are amplified rapidly through short videos. But the more this is the case, the more important it is to recognize the line that must never be crossed between expressing protest and committing a crime.

At the end of the day, this is not a “feel-good story of striking back at capital,” but an extreme collapse of self-control that pushed both himself and others into a deep pit. The warehouse is gone, the company has suffered losses, firefighting resources were heavily tied up, and more ordinary employees may also bear the consequences afterward. After reading about this incident, I am left with only one thought: the thing the real world most needs to upgrade has never been destructive power, but the ability to deal with anger.
