Hitman Classic Trilogy Remaster Set for 2027 Sparks Debate

After 007: First Light passed 2.7 million copies in its first week, IO Interactive formally unveiled Hitman: Classic Trilogy Remastered. The package is confirmed for 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and it includes Hitman: Codename 47, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, and Hitman: Contracts. Responses have been mixed, but the strategy is obvious: IO is returning to Hitman's earliest era.

Cautious optimism still feels like the sensible response. IO did not choose the safest possible remaster pitch here. Instead, it went back to the series' first three games. Anyone who played stealth games in the PS2 era knows what these entries mean to Hitman: foundational games, rough around the edges, but unmistakable in their design identity.

What IO has shown so far is restrained, which is probably the right call. The remaster will preserve the originals' classic art style while upgrading character models, high-resolution textures, and environmental detail. It will also let players switch freely between the original and remastered visuals. That is a useful feature, not the sort of token visual filter some publishers try to pass off as a revival. Keeping the old look available suggests IO understands what this audience actually values.

The real question was never resolution. It is feel and pacing. IO says the remaster will fully preserve the series' signature stealth-assassination play, including disguises, sneaking, and multiple ways to eliminate targets. That is the part that matters. If all this delivers is a sharper bald head while flattening the mission logic into a more standardized modern stealth game, the old Hitman identity goes with it.

The community debate is fairly direct. Some players are in immediately for the return of Hitman: Contracts. Others worry that the early games' heavier controls could be preserved almost unchanged. That concern is not unreasonable. Hitman: Codename 47 comes from a design era not every modern player is inclined to romanticize, especially newer players whose patience for older friction is usually lower.

If you came to the series through the later World of Assassination trilogy and mainly played on console, this collection feels more like a history lesson. You get to see how Agent 47 developed into the series' defining icon rather than simply a cold professional killer. If you already played the originals, the bigger issue is not nostalgia. It is whether IO can modernize them enough to feel playable today without tampering with the underlying structure.

So there is no need to pick a side yet. 2027 is still a long way off, and the current information is far from complete. What can be said now is that IO does not seem to be treating these three games like old warehouse stock bundled together for convenience. This does not look like a basic HD spruce-up. The studio seems to be using this remaster to reassert this long-running stealth series' roots. Whether it succeeds will depend on one thing: preserving the hardness of old-school design while still meeting the baseline expectations of a modern release.
