Beehive: Alien Tale Opens Playable Demo at ChinaJoy

Beehive: Alien Tales will open its latest demo during ChinaJoy 2026 at G306 in the N1 Game Feiyan Hall of the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Developed by Frozen Way and published globally by Snail Games, the first-person open-world survival sandbox is bringing its Sota7 ecology exploration and bioengineering systems directly to the show floor. It also puts real pressure on a studio still best known for the House Flipper series, with more than 5 million copies sold worldwide.

The reason to watch it is not the usual survival-sandbox pitch of more creatures, more combat, or just more systems. Its stronger idea is putting ecosystem-building at the center. Frozen Way, founded in 2017 in Krakow, Poland, is not new to building systems at scale, and the more than 5 million copies sold by House Flipper already prove that. But Beehive: Alien Tales is its first independently led large-scale original survival sandbox, which makes it a bigger step up in both design ambition and execution.

Snail Games matters here as well. The publisher has release experience with titles such as ARK: Survival Evolved, and it already has distribution reach across PC, console, and mobile. That does not guarantee the game will work, but it does suggest Beehive: Alien Tales is not being treated as a Steam-only play. A setup like that usually gives a game broader reach. Whether it can hold attention will come down to whether the demo makes bioengineering and base building feel cohesive once you are actually playing.

Compared with ARK: Survival Evolved, the difference in focus is fairly clear. Beehive: Alien Tales leans more toward solving an alien ecological puzzle than repeating a simple loop of gathering, taming, and fighting. Players step into the role of bioengineer Hennessy, sent to the planet Sota7 by the EON corporation. Progress comes through cross-pollinating plants, breeding animals, building bases, and exploring the planet's ecology, as part of a mission to uncover Sota7's secrets and save Earth. On paper, it sounds closer to a research-driven survival sandbox, which means its success or failure will rest more on system depth than on premise alone.

The game Honeycomb: Alien Life, a survival supernatural title, is set for release in 2026 on a planet called "Honeycomb" in Gotham, focusing on ecological engineering and resource exchanges.

For anyone heading to ChinaJoy, this looks like the kind of game you need to judge hands-on. The booth will include a life-size standee of protagonist Hennessy and additional interactive activities, while more details on the event schedule and demo will be announced later. If you already like open-world survival games in the mold of ARK but want something that pushes harder toward ecological engineering, this demo is worth watching. For ongoing updates, the Steam store page and official channels are still the best places to keep up.

Frozen Way jumping from House Flipper to a first-person survival sandbox is the real test for me; the bioengineering side sounds promising if it doesn’t turn into busywork.

Fair point, though exploration can carry some of that load if Sota7 feels eerie and alive; the ChinaJoy floor demo should at least show whether the bioengineering loop has real texture.

Interested, but I’m waiting to see if the Sota7 systems actually hold up once more players get their hands on it at ChinaJoy.
