Mixtape opened media reviews last night with the kind of numbers that instantly draw attention. Developed by Beethoven and Dinosaur and published by Annapurna Interactive, this adventure game blends music, youth, growing up, and parting—and its early critical run has been hard to ignore.
The confirmed headline results are straightforward. IGN gave Mixtape a perfect 10/10, calling it “the first 10 of the year.” At the same time, its Metacritic score debuted at 95, briefly pushing it ahead of both Pokémon Pokopia and Resident Evil 9: Requiem, which were sitting at 89.
What matters more, though, is the trajectory rather than a single spike. As more reviews came in, Mixtape’s Metacritic score fell to 85. That shift says quite a lot: this does not look like a universally embraced game with no friction at all, but more like a highly stylized coming-of-age work. If it lands for you, it may feel exceptional; if it doesn’t, you may only come away thinking the atmosphere is strong. That is why both reactions—canonizing it after the first wave of scores or dismissing it once the score cools—feel premature.
OpenCritic currently offers a steadier snapshot. The game has 32 critic reviews there and holds a 93 average, which puts it at No. 1 for the year for now, with a 3-point lead over Pokémon Pokopia.
That makes Mixtape easier to frame as a game with exceptionally strong media reception, but one whose real player experience still needs to be tested on release. Music, youth, and parting are themes that depend heavily on execution. When that execution works, the emotional effect can hit immediately; when it only partly works, what remains is a polished artistic pose. The strong press response at least suggests clear strengths in its aesthetic sense, narrative tone, and overall expression.
Still, media scores do not mean every player will agree. The original report also explicitly notes that these rankings and averages may still change, and that media reviews do not necessarily represent the game’s true quality.
If you already respond to music-driven storytelling, youth road-movie energy, and themes of growth and farewell, Mixtape is well worth adding to your wishlist. Based on the reception so far, this is not the kind of acclaim a typical indie adventure game picks up casually. If you care more about system depth, combat feedback, or replayable content, waiting makes more sense, because its appeal clearly does not lie in grinding or collecting, but in emotional resonance.
For players who usually gravitate toward turn-based systems and full-completion runs, Mixtape may not become the most replayable game of the year. It may, however, end up being one of the easiest to remember. Its most compelling quality right now is not just that the scores are high, but that it has already raised a bigger question: will this year’s lineup really include a game that writes youth and music straight into players’ hearts?
