Sony Scientist's Resume Leaks PS6 AI Frame Generation Feature

Sony senior research scientist Ayan Kumar Bhunia's LinkedIn profile reveals he's been leading frame interpolation pipeline research for "next-generation PlayStation platforms" since late 2023, work that has already resulted in two patent applications. PS6's iteration of PSSR will build on the PS5 Pro's existing AI upscaling by adding AI-driven frame generation.

For open-world players, the math gets interesting fast. PS6 hardware alone should push most games to a 60 FPS baseline—flip on AI frame generation and you're looking at 120 FPS. More critically, this makes path tracing viable. That level of lighting detail—every surface casting accurate reflections—has been stuck at 30 FPS on current hardware. Codemasters demonstrated F1 25 with path tracing enabled on PS5 Pro at GDC 2026, hitting exactly 30 FPS. With PS6's combined approach, the visual ceiling for exploration-focused games is about to break open.

Frame interpolation works by analyzing data between two actually rendered frames, then using AI to generate transitional frames in between. Sounds like cheating, but for sandbox players it's essential—when you're discovering an unmarked area at the map's edge and whipping the camera around, maintaining that fluidity changes the entire experience. Linear games can't replicate that. PS5 Pro's PSSR already proved AI upscaling can boost performance without sacrificing image quality. Add frame generation on top and you've got dual insurance for exploration.

Step back and the real value becomes clear: this tech doesn't just produce better benchmark numbers—it lets developers attempt wilder world designs. Path tracing used to be demo reel material only; actual open-world implementation meant gutting lighting effects to preserve frame rates. But if PS6 can use AI frame generation to reduce path tracing's performance cost, those sandbox scenarios with dynamic weather, real-time lighting, and massive NPC counts stop being theoretical. For players who compulsively clear every map marker, that's the upgrade worth waiting for—not how fast the console runs, but how real the world can be.
