According to the latest analysis from leak channel Moore's Law is Dead, the PS6 generation may not charge ahead as a single console, but instead arrive as a tiered lineup, split into three lines: PS6 Lite, PS6 Standard, and a PS6 handheld. For hardware enthusiasts, the most noteworthy part of this setup is not the names, but the fact that Sony seems ready to separate cost, performance, and usage scenarios into distinct product strategies.

In terms of plausibility, the part of this rumor that most resembles an actual “overall design strategy” is chip reuse. The report mentions that the PS6 Lite and PS6 handheld may share AMD’s 3nm “Canis” chip. This approach is much like using a common chassis in an equipment system: it can reduce R&D and manufacturing costs while also making later production allocation more flexible. The more premium PS6 Standard, meanwhile, is expected to use a more powerful custom AMD “Orion” APU and is seen as the true core console of this generation. The logic behind this division of roles is sound in itself and does not feel implausibly overengineered.

Then there’s the pricing structure, and the range is quite broad. The overall estimate falls between 350 and 1000 USD, with tariff impacts already factored in; among them, the PS6 Lite is expected to cost around 350—550 USD, the handheld around 500—700 USD, and the Standard around 700—1000 USD. This pricing structure resembles the division of light, medium, and heavy units in an armored force: it covers a wider range, but it also suggests that the Standard version may no longer be the mainstream “sweet spot” console, instead pushing clearly into the high-end segment.

The main text also contains a signal worth watching closely: the PS6 Standard may come in both a digital edition and a disc-drive edition, and judging by Sony’s current strategy, it is not impossible that future models could drop the built-in disc drive by default and rely on external accessories to support physical games. On a tactical level, this could indeed further lower the entry price; but for players who collect physical discs and value the second-hand market, this approach is far from friendly. It could even undermine the console’s sense of completeness, making it a trade-off that is commercially reasonable but not necessarily appealing in terms of user experience.

In terms of performance, the leak places the handheld in a very subtle position: stronger than Xbox Series S and Nintendo Switch 2, but still overall weaker than PS5. There have also been earlier claims that this handheld is already capable of running native PS5 games. If that statement is ultimately confirmed, then it would not be a traditional “cloud handheld” or a secondary companion device, but rather a genuine attempt to bring real firepower to mobile gaming scenarios. However, whether Sony can strike the right balance among thermals, battery life, and cost will be the key to determining its success or failure.

From the standpoint of buying advice for players, my judgment is quite clear. If you mainly play in the living room and want long-term performance headroom, the Standard version is still the safest main option; if you care more about price, the Lite looks more like Sony’s advance force for expanding its installed base; as for the handheld, it is best suited for people who are already in the console ecosystem but need a high-quality portable complement. If the three-model strategy does become reality, Sony’s move will not be a simple matter of piling on more SKUs, but rather a repeat of a more refined layered strategy. The only question is whether the final specifications will be solid enough to back it all up.
