SILENT HILL 2Silent Hill 2's Pyramid Head Inspiration Revealed, Sparking Controversy
On May 21, 2025, Masahiro Ito, the game designer behind the Silent Hill series' iconic monster Pyramid Head, posted a collection of his student artwork on social media. He confirmed that Pyramid Head's design was based on the collection's third drawing. Some Madonna fans later attacked Ito over how he described the video's influence.
Pyramid Head's design was not drawn from a single source. It grew out of several references and Ito's own experiments with form. The character remains so striking because it combines a hidden face, rigid geometry, and a starkly violent silhouette.

The third drawing from Ito's student artwork collection clarifies one part of Pyramid Head's origin. It does not mean the monster came from one old sketch alone. Its inspirations also include World War II-era German tanks, Braveheart, and the music video for Madonna's 1999 song Nothing Really Matters.
Ito explained in 2019 that the distorted movements of Pyramid Head and other monsters in Silent Hill 2, including the nurses, were influenced by choreography from that music video. The dancers used the aesthetic of butoh, the Japanese avant-garde dance form known for twisted, slow movements and white face makeup.
That detail helps explain why the monsters' movements feel so deeply unnatural. Their bodies do not simply attack or advance; they seem to deform as they move, turning familiar human motion into something oppressive and unsettling.

The dispute became more hostile after Ito discussed the video's influence. Some Madonna fans accused Ito of arrogance and continued sending him aggressive direct messages for months. More recently, one Madonna fan revived the dispute on social media in a distorted form, claiming that Madonna was the primary inspiration for the overall atmosphere of Silent Hill 2.
That argument confuses two very different levels of influence. A music video can provide a reference for movement and physical performance. It is not automatically the source of an entire game's world, narrative tone, atmosphere, or monster designs. Pyramid Head's creative background, as Ito has described it, also includes student doodles, war machinery, Braveheart, and the Madonna video.
Ito eventually permanently blocked all of the people who sent abusive messages. He also criticized them as “typical low-intelligence fanatics” who started the conflict and then portrayed themselves as the victims. The wording is harsh, but months of harassment give a creator the right to establish a boundary. Discussing artistic influence is fair. Rewriting an artist's creative history while attacking the artist crosses that boundary.

The dispute does, however, illustrate a broader point: artistic inspiration rarely has a single source. Doodles, military machinery, film, music videos, and dance aesthetics can be combined into a result that cannot be reduced to any one reference.
For players revisiting Silent Hill 2, Ito's student artwork is a worthwhile entry point for understanding Pyramid Head. The controversy may provide context for the monster's design, but harassment should not be treated as a legitimate expression of fan identity.
