Subnautica 2 gets Unreal Engine 5 remake with multiplayer support
Unknown Worlds Entertainment has announced that Subnautica 2 will enter Early Access eight years after the original game's release, with the lead designer revealing core details about Unreal Engine 5 implementation and multiplayer functionality in a recent interview.

The standout addition is full multiplayer support. While the original's solitary exploration created a distinct atmosphere, players have been requesting co-op features on forums for years. The studio has finally delivered—progress and story are fully shared, and saves can be transferred between players. Picture piloting the Tadpole (the successor to the Seamoth) with a crew into the deep, or operating a large submarine where one player handles navigation while another monitors sonar. The cooperative potential is substantial.

Technical upgrades are comprehensive. Unreal Engine 5's Nanite and Lumen technologies should significantly enhance underwater lighting and visual fidelity compared to the predecessor. The new planet setting introduces an entirely new ecosystem of alien flora and fauna. Vehicle-wise, beyond the Tadpole, updated versions of the Prawn Suit and Cyclops will arrive post-launch, bringing back these iconic tools with modern improvements.

The development team maintains its non-violent survival philosophy. The lead designer was explicit: "We want players to adapt to this world, not conquer it." Firearms won't be part of the arsenal—survival depends on observing creature behavior patterns and finding ways to coexist. This design approach stands out in a market saturated with combat-focused titles.

The narrative setup shifts perspective—players are inhabitants of this alien world rather than outsiders. While not a direct sequel, the story connects to the previous two games. The studio emphasized that this Early Access build represents their largest content launch to date. Chinese localization has received significant development resources, ensuring accessibility for that player base. Both Creative and Survival modes will be available at launch, with additional customization options planned for future updates to accommodate both casual and hardcore playstyles.
