The Chinese dub of *The Rutley Family Is Dead* is here! This time, it’s really time to dive in!
Starting from 12 hours in, what I love most is this kind of mystery game where you have to piece together fragments yourself and restore the truth like completing an encyclopedia. This time, The Roottrees Are Dead has added Mandarin voice acting, and for Chinese players, the significance is very straightforward: it has finally evolved from “playable” into “much better suited for an immersive experience.” Especially since this is a free update—the dev team turned their gratitude into actual content completion—and that kind of sincerity really earns points in the indie game scene.

The game’s core appeal already fits my tastes perfectly. It’s not just a simple point-and-click hidden object game; instead, it uses a “search engine” mechanic to drive the progression. Players have to rely on keyword searches to track down clues, piece together evidence, and gradually dig up the secrets of the Roottree family. It feels a lot like digging through ancient records and unlocking hidden side quests in a JRPG, except here that sense of investigation is built into the core gameplay. Add in a huge web of character relationships and suspenseful storytelling, and it’s no surprise that it has maintained a 96% positive rating on Steam.

More importantly, there’s another very interesting layer of information behind this update. The Roottrees Are Dead did not support Chinese at launch, yet quite a few Chinese players still powered through the game in English; in a sense, this group was the earliest “advance team.” Then, by December 2025, after the game added Simplified Chinese, the Chinese-speaking region quickly delivered extremely strong feedback. The dev team even mentioned that in just two weeks, sales in the Chinese region had already exceeded the combined sales of all non-English regions in other languages. That result basically amounted to slapping a market signal directly onto the developers’ desk.

In addition, the developers have confirmed that their next title, The Case of the Golden Idol, will support Simplified Chinese right at launch. For players who enjoy visual novels and suspenseful detective stories, that’s even more exciting than a one-off update, because it shows that Chinese players are no longer just getting “added later” support, but are now being included in launch planning. Much like how the crystal motif in the FF series keeps being reinterpreted, when a team is willing to keep refining its work around player feedback, it means they genuinely want to make the series more complete.

If you were hesitant before because of the language barrier, now is actually the perfect time to jump in. With Mandarin voice acting now available, the experience in this kind of game—which depends heavily on understanding text and processing clues—improves very noticeably, especially for players who like to reason things out slowly and repeatedly double-check details. That said, it should be made clear in advance: at its core, this is still a text-driven puzzle mystery, not a high-intensity spectacle-focused game. So unfortunately, if all you want is strong action feedback, it probably won’t click with you. But if you’re like me—if hidden information, character relationships, and keyword-based investigation instantly light up your eyes—then this latest update for The Roottrees Are Dead is absolutely worth your ticket.
