*Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* storms onto PS+ — Sony really went all out this time!

After the official unlock of the PlayStation Plus March additions on March 20, what made the biggest splash was clearly not the “quantity,” but the “quality” of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2. The third-person shooter developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment ignited the player community almost as soon as it entered the PS+ game catalog, especially among Extra and Premium members, where discussion heat has clearly hit the max.

Why is it being so highly praised? The core reason is simple: subscription services are increasingly starting to feel like warehouses of “good enough” content, and there are not many games that truly make players feel like “this alone made the subscription worth it.” Space Marine 2 just happens to be that kind of rare hardcore product—third-person shooting, melee charges, heavy-armor domination, and crisp pacing—like the straightforward, visceral action thrills of the Xbox 360 era, repackaged to modern standards.

Players on Reddit have already called it “the best game the service has had in a long time,” and some hot posts go even further, saying this is the strongest PS+ catalog addition in recent years. I don’t think that kind of response is exaggerated. That’s because it isn’t the kind of game that pads its runtime with an open world or drags out progression with stat systems. Instead, it puts the “combat experience” front and center. For many players whose patience has been worn down by formulaic blockbusters, that sense of purity is actually rare.

From a market-performance perspective, this game already had solid footing: it is regarded as one of the best third-person shooters of 2024, received two TGA nominations, and holds a Metacritic score of 83. More importantly, its barrier to entry is not high—an average player can finish the main story in about 10 to 15 hours; if you want to fully exhaust the content, playtime can stretch to 60 to 70 hours. In other words, it’s suitable both for a weekend main-story sprint and for a longer-term, slower grind.

For PS5 Pro users, there’s another layer of good news this time. Sony just rolled out the PSSR 2.0 update this week, and some subscribers have already reported that Space Marine 2 looks even better on the high-end model. For a game that emphasizes the oppressive feel of heavy armor and the scale of the battlefield, improvements in visual stability and clarity really do have a direct impact on the sense of satisfaction.

If you happen to be a PS+ Extra or Premium member, my recommendation is very clear: download it first. Space Marine 2 is the kind of game that makes you feel like you’re missing out if you don’t play it through the subscription. Especially amid widespread concerns that subscription-service lineups in 2026 will generally lean conservative, this catalog addition feels more like a shot in the arm. At the very least, it shows that Sony is still occasionally willing to put genuinely heavyweight titles into the library.

Another interesting signal is that the third entry in the series is already moving forward. Considering that the remaster of the original previously suffered from both poor reception and quality issues, even triggering large-scale refunds, the success of Space Marine 2 feels all the more crucial—it not only restored the series’ momentum, but also gave this IP the confidence to keep expanding again. For players who love hardcore action shooters, that may be the most exciting part of all.
