“Want 'do you actually know how to use a computer' turned into a whole detective game? You rummage a dead uncle's PC — renaming files, guessing passwords — to crack the case, though it runs a short eight to ten hours and the themes cut deep.”
評測總結
The Best Puzzle Here Is Knowing How Computers Used To Fight You

Desktop Explorer works because it takes that smug little feeling of, “Yeah, I know my way around a computer,” and turns it into the whole puzzle language. You’re not just clicking glowing objects. You’re renaming file extensions. You’re digging through hidden folders. You’re cracking passwords inside passwords. One solve opens the next locked drawer, and when it lands, it doesn’t feel like the game handed you a key. It feels like you remembered how to use a machine.
That’s the hook. You inherit an old PC from a dead uncle, then start rummaging through abandoned profiles, weird programs, cryptic games, and outdated software, trying to work out who used this thing and what happened to them. The 90s desktop recreation is doing a lot of heavy lifting here: chunky grey windows, dial-up screeches, a little notepad mascot yapping at you from the corner, and an original score wrapping the whole thing in that half-cozy, half-wrong atmosphere.
But here’s the catch: the pacing isn’t clean. Previews point to one early puzzle that can stop you cold, then four more that just fall over instantly. That’s a real issue in a game like this, because the whole fantasy is momentum. You want to feel clever, not randomly stalled. And when the story threads start stacking up, the information load gets chunky enough that multiple previews mention taking paper notes. I actually like that, to a point. For Her Story people, that’s part of the ritual. For everyone else, it may feel like homework with modem noises.
Hypnospace Outlaw Fans, This One Hurts More

The cleanest comparison is Hypnospace Outlaw, but don’t go in expecting the same goofy web-archeology vibe. Hypnospace is playful and nostalgic. Desktop Explorer uses that same fake-interface investigation energy and shoves it into a much heavier private mystery. It sits near Her Story, Hypnospace Outlaw, and Return of the Obra Dinn in the “dig through evidence and build the truth yourself” lane, but emotionally, this one is sharper and more personal.
That also means the audience is pretty specific. If you like narrative puzzle games where the gameplay is reading, connecting, searching, and noticing what doesn’t add up, this is aimed right at you. If you can handle darker psychological material, that’s where it gets interesting. The late-game glitching apparently pushes the tone away from cozy nostalgia and into something uncanny, leaning more on fragmented memory and dread than cheap jump scares. Good. That’s the right kind of scary for a desktop mystery.
But I wouldn’t recommend this to someone who wants action, speed, combat, or a relaxing night after work. The subject matter includes depression, self-injury, PTSD, and family grief. That is not flavor text. That is the emotional spine of the thing. If that’s not a place you should be going right now, skip it. No game is worth walking into material you know is bad for you.
A 7.8 Built On Demo Heat, Not Review-Aggregate Certainty

So, where do I land overall? For this segment, I’m at a 7.8 out of 10. And I want to be clear about what that score is based on. On launch day, there isn’t a media aggregate score to lean on, so this is being treated transparently as a read from the roughly 98% positive demo buzz, previews, and early feedback, not some fake consensus that doesn’t exist yet.
The backing is interesting, too. Desktop Explorer comes from Recurring Dream, with Recurring Dream, Outersloth, and indienova on publishing, and it has funding support tied to Outersloth and Casey Yano from Slay the Spire. It has also had the right kind of festival visibility for this genre, showing up around the Latin American Games Showcase SGF edition and Fellow Traveller’s narrative-focused showcase. That doesn’t magically make it great, but it tells you the lane it’s being pushed in: small, authored, story-first, and very much for people who like their mysteries built out of documents and interfaces.
Platform-wise, the sensible advice is simple: treat this as a Steam PC game first. The whole premise is poking around an old computer, so playing it on the machine it’s imitating is the clean fit. Also, manage your value expectations. The run is roughly 8 to 10 hours, there’s no DLC, and once you know the mystery, there probably isn’t much real replay. For the right player, that’s fine. You’re buying one focused investigation. Just don’t buy it expecting an endless puzzle box.

Feel really rushed towards the end, But overall a really good game with well designed puzzles.展開收起
