If you only look at the release year, it would be hard to imagine that the star of this latest Steam popularity rebound would be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. But reality is just that dramatic: a 7-year-old title has now surpassed the recently released Call of Duty 22: Black Ops 7 in concurrent players. On Steam, the most direct proving ground, players are voting with their feet.

According to overseas outlet tech4gamers, the core driver behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s resurgence this time is its new all-time low discount on Steam. Once the price incentive kicked in, the player pool seemed to be reactivated: the current player count has exceeded 50,000, and in the past 24 hours it even reached a historic Steam peak of 61,667 concurrent players. By comparison, Call of Duty 22: Black Ops 7 sits at 50,000 players, meaning the veteran has completed its comeback.

What’s even more interesting is that this wave of popularity is not just people “logging in to take a look.” Modern Warfare has already climbed to No. 3 on Steam’s global top sellers chart, with only the recently released Crimson Desert and the perennial chart-topper CS2 ahead of it. That indicates both returning players and new adopters are present, with sales and activity rising at the same time.
Why did this happen? I’d rather see it as a very typical swing back in player taste. Foreign media believe that Modern Warfare reshaped the identity of Call of Duty through a more authentic military experience, while Black Ops 7, because of its overly “goofy” style and repetitive content, has caused some longtime fans to lose interest. For an annualized FPS franchise, players do not necessarily chase “updates” forever—they will also return to the version whose gunplay, pacing, and battlefield atmosphere feel more right.

From an industry perspective, this looks like a warning sign for both Activision and EA: major FPS publishers cannot rely on IP inertia alone. If a new release loses balance in stylistic direction and content iteration, discounted classics can pull popularity back at any time. The report also mentions that Activision is planning to launch an entirely new Call of Duty sub-series in 2027. To some extent, that also shows the company is already aware that the old formula needs reworking.
If you’re thinking about jumping in now, my advice is simple: if you want the atmosphere of multiplayer combat and prefer a more grounded battlefield presentation, this discount period is a good time to try Call of Duty: Modern Warfare; but if you care more about the long-term ecosystem of future versions and the direction of official support, then it’s still worth continuing to watch the update quality of the new titles. At its core, this current “old game taking down a new game” is not about nostalgia defeating the future—it’s players telling publishers that the true lifeline of an FPS has always been feel, identity, and sustainable freshness.
