Halo trilogy remake confirmed in Unreal Engine 5, full production underway
Halo Studios and Certain Affinity confirmed that Project Ekur, a standalone multiplayer game built on Unreal Engine 5, is in active development alongside early-stage remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3. The studio stated both remakes will release regardless of how Halo: Campaign Evolved performs commercially.

The shift to Unreal Engine 5 goes beyond visual upgrades—it's a complete overhaul of the development pipeline. The next mainline Halo title, Project Ekur, and the remakes now share the same toolchain. This consolidation creates a unified technical foundation across the franchise, making cross-project collaboration more feasible than the fragmented approach of previous years.

Halo: Campaign Evolved launches July 28 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, with early access starting July 23. The three new prequel missions do more than fill narrative gaps—they contain teaser content for the Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes. The Brute characters and new Covenant faction draw design inspiration directly from Halo: Reach's original art style. These missions essentially lay worldbuilding groundwork for the upcoming remakes.

Campaign Evolved won't include multiplayer at launch, and Project Ekur's development timeline remains unannounced. For players who treat Halo as their competitive multiplayer home, this gap could be frustrating. The franchise has sold over 65 million copies, so the studio won't abandon this core territory—they just need Unreal 5's foundation fully built first.

For series veterans, Campaign Evolved's early access is worth watching—the new sprint mechanic and prequel missions preview the remake design philosophy. If you prioritize multiplayer, wait for the June 7 Xbox showcase. The studio will likely announce concrete timelines for Project Ekur and the remakes then. Knowing when the full map unfolds matters more than rushing in blind.
