iPhone 18 lineup gets 12GB RAM across all models as Apple finally loosens the purse strings
Apple's finally loosening its grip on RAM. The iPhone 18 lineup will ship with 12GB of memory across all models—a rare concession from a company notorious for soldering minimal specs into premium devices. Paired with the debut 2-nanometer A20 chip, this generation could deliver a meaningful performance leap.

Hardware splits follow Apple's usual tiering: base models get the A20, while Pro variants receive the A20 Pro. More significant is the universal adoption of Apple's second-generation C2 5G modem, replacing both the C1 and C1X and finally cutting ties with Qualcomm. The custom chip supports millimeter-wave bands and may enable satellite connectivity, promising better coverage in fringe scenarios.

Pricing holds steady despite the spec bump. Given the cost premium of 2-nanometer fabrication and doubled memory, that's unexpected. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo attributes the restraint to Apple's services revenue cushioning hardware margins. The base model does sacrifice screen quality to hit that price point—full-spec buyers will need to spring for Pro.
The strategy is transparent: raise the performance floor with memory and silicon, eliminate supply chain dependencies with in-house modems, and offset hardware costs through services. For users, 12GB means smoother multitasking and extended device longevity. If you're still running an 8GB model, the iPhone 18 presents a solid upgrade window—assuming you can live with the base model's display compromise.
