Is NieR Really Getting a New Game This Rumor Feels Bigger Than the Stream

According to Tweak Town, a new game based on Square Enix's NieR action RPG series is reportedly in development. That matches what well-known insider NateTheHate said in his latest YouTube Q&A: he heard about a new NieR project last year, but has not heard anything further since. For now, that leaves fans with something familiar for NieR: a rumor with enough substance to note, but nowhere near enough to count as a reveal.

The bigger point is how vague all of this still is. In February this year, during the NieR: Automata 9th anniversary livestream, Square Enix hinted at a follow-up with the line "NieR: Automata to be continued...". It was a classic tease: enough to spark speculation, not enough to clarify anything.

That is why this rumor carries more weight than the usual chatter. NateTheHate was notably restrained: he only said he heard about the project last year, and that there has been no new information since. Alongside Tweak Town's report, that suggests less that a reveal is close and more that this was probably not invented out of thin air. A NieR project appears to have existed in some form, even if nobody can say with confidence where it stands now.

The problem is that Square Enix has said almost nothing officially. That "to be continued" message could point to a mainline sequel, a spinoff, or some other related project entirely. No clarification has followed. Series director Yoko Taro also joked that the phrase meant "'making money' to be continued", which is exactly the kind of half-serious, self-deflating tease fans expect from him.

NateTheHate also said he has heard nothing new about Kingdom Hearts 4. His guess is that Square Enix may share some kind of update this summer, even if it is only a small one. He also believes the company's main focus right now is Final Fantasy 7: Revelation. That assessment sounds plausible, especially if Final Fantasy 7: Revelation is where Square Enix is concentrating its efforts.

So for NieR fans, the sensible position is cautious optimism. The signs are worth remembering, but not treating as confirmation of a release window or even a formal announcement. What matters is not whether a new game is about to be announced. It is that Square Enix has now put out several hints pointing in the same direction, suggesting the NieR IP has not simply been shelved. The real question, as ever, is what form Yoko Taro's next NieR project might take.
