Marvel’s Avengers Appears on a New PlayStation Collection Cover Despite Being Delisted

On September 12 (9/12), the PlayStation Store launched a new Marvel game collection tied to the release of Marvel’s Wolverine. Its cover unexpectedly includes Marvel’s Avengers, the live-service game that shut down and was delisted in 2023. For now, the listing is being treated as a design oversight, not a stealth announcement.

When a live-service game disappears, its absence is usually more final than a normal delisting. A single-player game can vanish from sale and still sit on a hard drive. With an online service game such as Marvel’s Avengers, however, a server shutdown and store delisting can take access with it. That makes its return on official storefront art jarring, even if it is almost certainly accidental.

The collection does include many of the obvious Marvel picks: Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel Rivals, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and the featured Marvel’s Wolverine. It gathers most of the major Marvel games currently available on PlayStation’s storefront, which may explain the design. The apparent goal was to fit in as many Marvel titles as possible, and Marvel’s Avengers appears to have slipped onto the art by mistake.

The logic is easy enough to read: more logos, more recognizable characters, more Marvel. That approach works until it includes a game that has been unavailable for three years.

The timing still gave the rumor mill something to work with. A recently noticed “unannounced Marvel’s Avengers” entry in the Steam backend briefly led parts of the community to imagine a revival. The record’s history is less exciting. The entry was added as early as 2013, and appears to correspond to an older THQ project that was canceled before Crystal Dynamics took over. The available clues do not connect it to a revival of the delisted game.

There is still one loose end. The Steam entry was still updated last year, suggesting that the backend may retain another separate Avengers-related project. It is still unclear whether those updates are just leftover metadata or signs of a separate project that has not disappeared. For now, the entry is evidence of an old record, not proof of a comeback.

For anyone considering the collection, the safer purchases are the single-player games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Their content is complete and does not depend on a server remaining online. Marvel’s Avengers, by contrast, is currently just a name on the cover: unavailable to buy and unavailable to play.

The mistake is less a tease than a reminder. Once a service game shuts down, even being forgotten is not always handled cleanly. Until Marvel or another official source says otherwise, treat any Avengers revival talk as speculation, not news.
