Sold for $1.4 Million! Pokémon Cards Increase in Value by Over 25 Times in Ten Years
"An extremely rare Pokémon card recently sold for a staggering $1.4 million (approximately 10 million RMB)," resetting value perceptions within the collecting community. This Pikachu Illustrator card officially went under the hammer at Heritage Auctions on March 27, graded Mint 9. For ordinary players, this figure might be unimaginable, but in the collecting circle, it is a very real transaction.
The card was actually a prize for the 1998 Japanese "CoroCoro Comic" magazine art competition, with only 39 known copies in existence. Scarcity combined with perfect condition has made it the ultimate goal pursued by collectors. Ten years ago, a card of the same quality sold for less than $55,000 at the same auction house, marking an increase of over 25-fold.
The only known card graded Gem Mint 10 in perfect condition was acquired by influencer Logan Paul in 2021 for $4 million plus a Grade 9 card. This perfect condition card was resold for $16.5 million five years later, demonstrating the astonishing premium potential of top-tier condition. In comparison, although the Grade 9 card sold this time is slightly inferior, it remains invaluable. The price chasm created by this grading difference is precisely where the unique charm of the collecting market lies.

The successful auction of this card once again proves the strong influence of the Pokémon brand across generations. Whether there will be higher price transaction records in the future, we will continue to keep a close eye on market developments.
