Capcom has officially revealed a remake of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and the trailer's enlarged "RE V" has quickly sparked speculation among fans. Because V is the Roman numeral for 5, and because Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 8: Village also embedded numerals into their title design, some fans are asking one question: is this remake being positioned closer to Resident Evil 5 than expected? For now, that remains unclear.
What gives that theory some weight is the branding choice itself. This version drops "CODE" from the older title and pushes "RE V" to the front, a move many see as Capcom trying to shake off the game's old side-story status and elevate it toward mainline status.

The logic is straightforward. Starting with the Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom did not simply recreate old games map for map. The Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 remakes also rewrote parts of their original stories and settings, while connecting more cleanly with Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 8: Village, and Resident Evil 9. Anyone familiar with that pattern can see why the current remake run no longer feels like preservation. It feels more like the series is rebuilding its mainline continuity through older games.

There is also a more practical reason Resident Evil 5 keeps coming up, and it goes beyond the numeral. The original game's African setting, along with its infected enemies being largely local Black residents, has in recent years drawn criticism amid wider Western debates over race and representation. Multiple Western gaming outlets have suggested Capcom may be staying quiet about any Resident Evil 5 remake plans because of the controversy. At the same time, reports that a Resident Evil 5 remake has been in development have been circulating since 2024. Taken together, that has only made Capcom's plans harder to parse.
The timing matters because there are not many unremade entries left in the lineup. As the original article notes, the only mainline entries still without remakes are Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 5, and Resident Evil 6. If Code Veronica is indeed being repositioned more centrally, the impact would go beyond one legacy title returning. It could affect the remake order, the way the story links together, and even which project gets priority next.
For now, this is better read as a signal than a conclusion. Capcom has confirmed that the Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake is real, but whether it will replace Resident Evil 5, run alongside it, or simply use "RE V" as a marketing hook is still unknown. For series fans, the real question is whether Capcom develops this "RE V" framing into something that genuinely feeds into the mainline series.
