At Square Enix’s 46th shareholders meeting held today, the company addressed a pointed question about Nintendo’s new console: could Final Fantasy XV come to Switch 2, and could Final Fantasy VII Remake eventually reach Switch? The response was cautious. SE said there are real hardware-level limitations involved in such ports, but that, based on Switch 2’s hardware specs, the idea is not completely impossible. The company added that it will continue to study the possibility.

This wasn’t a general discussion of platform strategy. A shareholder asked specifically about Final Fantasy XV on Switch 2 and Final Fantasy VII Remake on Switch, and Square Enix’s answer was equally specific: not an announcement or a denial, but confirmation that the company hasn’t closed off the idea.

That caution makes sense given the games involved. Final Fantasy XV is built around open areas and large-scale presentation, while Final Fantasy VII Remake relies heavily on visual fidelity and combat responsiveness. Neither port would be as simple as dropping the resolution and shipping it. So when the official spokesperson says there are hardware-level limitations, that is not filler language. It points directly to the core problem.

Still, there is one positive signal here: Square Enix has not ruled out Switch 2. For Nintendo players, that alone gives the response some weight. If a flagship series like Final Fantasy can be made to run on the new hardware, it would be a significant addition to Switch 2’s eventual software lineup.

There’s a broader point here beyond fan wish-listing. Big-budget multiplatform releases are never as simple as “just optimize it.” They test engine capability, resource allocation, and long-term publishing strategy.
