Why Uncharted 3 Crammed 12 Set Pieces Into One Game
Former Naughty Dog designer Benson Russell told the FRVR podcast that Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception began with a whiteboard covered in roughly 10 to 12 set-piece concepts. The team planned a second pass to cut the list to four. That pass never happened. Almost every pitch on the board—including the cargo-plane freefall and the desert horse chase—ended up in the final game.
Those sequences became some of the most famous in the series, and Russell said their origin reveals the strain behind the spectacle. Where Uncharted 2: Among Thieves built its set pieces from the story outward, Uncharted 3 gathered ideas first and asked questions later. The cargo-plane fall and the desert horse chase came from the same brainstorm. A later cull was supposed to keep only four, yet it was never held. Russell argued at the time that nothing would actually get cut. He was right.

That action-first, story-second approach put writer Amy Hennig in a tight spot. The ship level had already been blocked out, so the script had to wedge in pirate villains just to justify the sequence. The set-piece list grew, but the connective tissue suffered. Russell was blunt: this method was Uncharted 3's biggest weakness.
Still, he admitted the choices made sense in retrospect. Uncharted 2 had set a high bar, and the team's instinct was to deliver more unforgettable moments. Uncharted 3 did exactly that, and it still found both critical and commercial success.

The result is a game packed with standout moments that never quite add up to a consistent whole. Russell's honesty about the process is more useful than another round of praise for the plane sequence: it explains why Uncharted 3 thrills in the moment even when the larger story struggles to keep pace. If you haven't played it, expect some of the best action sequences in the series and a story that strains to hold them together. In an era where spectacle is cheap, Uncharted 3's real lesson is restraint. That desert sunset is still worth the pause, though.
