“If you already love real-time strategy and the tug-of-war over front-line points, this sturdy WWII RTS will reward your forty hours.”
Unser Fazit
If you are willing to spend thirty or forty hours, Company of Heroes 3 gives you a clear return: a still-solid, still-punchy WWII real-time strategy core, plus a layer of grand strategy structure that is willing to try something new. Its most valuable quality is not that any single system is earth-shattering, but that the whole package of capturing points, suppression, unit counters, and front-line tug still tastes good after all this time. It is like an old restaurant that never swapped out its signature dish and merely added a few new items to the menu. Not every one of them is perfect, but the main course is still steady.
A valuable reworking, not a total overhaul
It also genuinely does not reach the point of making you slam the table in excitement. The visuals are not bad, yet they do not lead. The narrative is watchable, yet it lacks a gripping character center. The audio is responsible for holding the battlefield together, yet it leaves few extra memories behind. Against Company of Heroes 2, this is not the kind of sequel that completely steamrolls its predecessor; it is more a worthwhile reworking of a classic formula. Against a more hardcore, scale-focused tactics rival, it is less punishing and more approachable. And against the broader hybrid route of grand strategy plus real-time combat, it has not yet matured enough to stand as the new benchmark. The media scores cluster around eight out of ten, and that clustering matches the read exactly: strong, dependable, and a step short of stellar. This is a game that knows what it is and executes it with confidence rather than reinvention. That self-awareness is worth something. Rather than overreach and stumble, it doubles down on the front-line combat that has always been its strongest hand and bolts on a strategy layer that genuinely adds without distracting. The seams show, but the core never wobbles.
Worth the hours, with expectations set
So is it worth the few dozen hours? If you already have an appetite for real-time strategy, the answer is yes, and the odds are you will only get smoother and more comfortable the longer you play. The combat opens up as your reads sharpen, the strategy map keeps the campaigns from staling, and the factions give you reasons to keep coming back. If, on the other hand, you weigh story-driven design more heavily, or crave audiovisual spectacle, or expect a sequel that completely reinvents the series' character, then set your expectations a little lower going in. This is not a masterpiece. But it is a sturdy, hard-wearing work that is also willing to take a step forward, and that combination is rarer than it sounds. For the player it is built for, the front-line regular who lives for the back-and-forth over a single contested point, it delivers exactly the experience promised, and it delivers it for a long time. Set against its own ambitions it falls a little short, but set against the simple question of whether it is a good real-time strategy game worth your hours, it answers clearly and well.
