“The Nemesis System turns every orc into your personal rival, anchoring a Mordor sandbox that actually remembers you”
Unser Fazit
Time quietly cleared its name
When Shadow of War arrived in October 2017 it walked straight into the industry's loot-box reckoning. Burying microtransactions in the core loop made it a poster child for everything players were furious about, and its brazen edits to Tolkien canon drew a second barrage from the lore faithful. But time is a fair judge. With the microtransactions stripped out, the epilogue trimmed, and the smoke of controversy cleared, what remains on the table is a Nemesis System that an entire generation remembers. Its coordinate in 2017 was scandal; its coordinate now is benchmark.

There is a longer fable buried in here about how an industry treats its audience: the game got greedy and paid for it, then won the room back by owning the mistake and handing the core experience back to the people who bought it. Few blockbusters trace that arc so cleanly, and fewer still come out the far side with their reputation not just intact but quietly improved. The version on sale now is, in a real sense, the apology made playable.
The patent that left it standing alone
There is one more wrinkle worth knowing: the Nemesis System was later patented by WB Games. That legal wall answers a question that has nagged players for years: why has a system this good gone essentially uncopied by other big-budget studios for so long? The answer is not that it cannot be done — it is that it is not allowed. And so the Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War pairing occupies a faintly lonely spot in action-game history: it invented a mechanic everyone admired, then, for reasons both commercial and legal, never got to see it take root across the wider industry.

That loneliness is its own kind of distinction. Most great ideas get iterated on, refined, absorbed into the genre's bloodstream until nobody remembers who did them first. This one was fenced off and left to stand by itself, which means that going back to Mordor is still the only place you can have this specific experience. Scarcity, for once, works in a game's favour rather than against it.
Who should buy in, who should walk past
So should you pull the trigger today? If what you want is brisk, readable combat, an open world that keeps reshaping itself around your choices, and a roster of personal orc enemies that belongs to you and nobody else, Shadow of War is close to irreplaceable — and that is exactly the audience it serves: open-world players chasing action and a story of their own enemies. Topping the US sales charts in October 2017 was earned on the strength of that one-of-a-kind hook.

If, on the other hand, you came for undiluted Middle-earth, hold Tolkien canon sacred, or are flatly sick of the tag-unlock-take-the-outpost Ubisoft routine, it will likely let you down — the story will offend you and the mid-game will wear you out. Lore purists and narrative-first players should walk past. On balance I land on an 8. The score deliberately reins in the gameplay highs, because a shaky script and a launch built on microtransactions genuinely held it back; but it stands tall regardless, on a Nemesis System nobody has managed to replicate. If you buy it, buy the Definitive Edition — the version that patched every wound and kept only the core magic. Call it the fair shake time owed it, and finally paid.
